I’m working on a graphic novel scene at the moment, and don’t want to rip off somebody (or at least, I want to know whom I’m ripping off). Does this comic strip/cartoon scene sound familiar to anyone?
kid walking down sidewalk, pulling little red wagon. In the wagon: a goldfish in a goldfish bowl. i.e., kid talking his/her fish for a walk.
This seems familiar to me, but damned if I can remember where I saw it. Can anyone ID the source?
Man! I’m visualizing the scene just as you describe it. Guesses:
Dennis the Menace (although he would be torturing the fish)
Calvin (of & Hobbes but I never read that strip so that can’t be it. I guess)
some random kid in a Tom & Jerry or Bugs Bunny cartoon
Blondie & Dagwood’s offspring
one of the Peanuts kids
some kid in one of the Little Rascals movies
Leave it to Beaver maybe
some Disney animated feature
How much is that doggie in the window?
The one with the waggily tail
How much is that doggie in the window?
I do hope that doggie’s for sale.
I don’t want a bunny or a kitty.
I don’t want a parrot that talks.
I don’t want a bowl of little fishies. You can’t take a goldfish for walks.
Someone taking their goldfish for a walk - be it it in a wagon or on a skateboard, go-kart, whatever - is a gag done by so many comic strips and cartoons (an example), as well as live-action comedy shows that it’s gonna be almost impossible for you to trace the original time the gag was used.
I did come across that cartoon last night. I guess you’re right–in which case, I’m not too worried. I thought it was much more of a unique occurrence. Looks like it’s pretty much a “common domain” sort of gag.
