I ate a warm brownie with ice cream. Less than an hour later I’m having sharp, cramplike pain just below my ribcage that radiates into my right shoulder. No other indigestion, just pain, which makes my abdomen bloat out because I can’t bear to suck in my stomach muscles.

Female. Barely obese. Insulin resistant. On oral contraceptives. I began having these attacks in my mid-twenties. They went away during the few years I was focused on reproduction and went off the pill. Now I’m on it again and they’re back.
