My front yard currently does not have anything that would prohibit my 2 dogs to the confines of the front yard. I need something that is not permanent to place around my yard to keep them from wandering out in the street but still have the freedom to run around out front.
I have been unsuccessful looking on the net for anything so was hoping maybe you guys would have something to suggest.
I have seen the electric fences but that isn’t something that I am all that interested in. I need some type of fence that I could stick in my grass for a day or 2 then take it out and store it till I want to take my dogs out again.
The 2 dogs are both Chihuahua’s so they are pretty small.
You want them to run around the whole yard, or just part of it?
I have a small wire dog pen that I used when I had puppies to contain - you could easily hook two together and make a bigger enclosure. I see that Petco has a big variety of them.
I keep my golden retriever on a really long rope. 50’ of that nice soft rope (used for laundry lines I think) with a clasp on one end to go on her collar and the other end is attatched to some sort of metal bracket with a loop my dad installed on a porch bannister on the front of the house.
She loves the rope (loves tugging it) and it doesn’t get in the way TOO much when I’m mowing. She’s used it for 2 years now, and it has trained her to stay in the yard so now we don’t use it too much anymore.
You may need a lighter (nylon?) rope for small dogs.
Hrm those are extremely close to what I am looking for. Although they are a bit high and a bit small. But the functionality is near what I a want just smaller.
Yeah I thought about that but haven’t found anything light enough. Perhaps I could use a heavy fishing line? Worth a try I guess.
Thanks for the replies.
I wouldn’t spring for a tether system be it hooked from the ground or a run line from a clothesline apparatus, unless they’ll be monitored constantly while outside. There’s always the risk of them getting tangled in a way to hurt themselves, particularly as bouncy as some chihuahuas are. My chi gets himself tangled in patio chairs constantly, although we are always there to free him, but on a hot day, if not watched, he might end up stuck in the sun and unable to get to shade, or a water dish or something. The dogs might even chew through a tether, and swallowing some may hurt them, possibly coiling up inside and causing blockage. There’s also a risk of predators or other dangers when tethered. I don’t precisely know about the L.A. area you’re in, but if your little chis get harassed by a larger dog (okay, make that any dog), or a cat, or possibly hawks or Africanized honey bees, they won’t be able to flee to safety. Well, they wouldn’t be able to flee to safety in a little fenced area either, but fences may stop or at least stymie the mammalian dangers. I have no clue if the “killer bees” are in L.A.; I just remember living in southeastern Texas, there were cases of dogs left outdoors who got killed because there’s no escape from them, along with tethered dogs getting mauled by cougars or other dogs with rabies.
A lot of those chickenwire/metal mesh fences can be good. I know they’re small, but if you buy a handful you can just attach them however you want, then disassemble them and they don’t take up too much room in storage. Just make sure your little chis aren’t climbers. But with that, you should be capable of not monitoring them constantly, although I recommend it, just because larger dogs will probably not want to bother jumping over the fence at them, or it will be too tall for them to do so easily.
hah yeah both of them are climbers. They absolutely refuse to be put in the kitchen with only a baby gate to keep them in. They will jump as high as they can get then climb the rest of the way.
I don’t intent to leave them out in the yard unsupervised ever. More of a family hang out in the front with the dogs type of deal.
