My 15 year old Springer has severe osteoarthritis. His back legs are very weak and he often falls back on his hind quarters because of this.
The vet has prescribed Previcox which is a relatively new NSAID (non steroidal anti inflammatory drug) specifically for Canine Osteoarthritis. After one day, I think I can see an improvement in him.
Has anyone had long term experience with their dog and this drug? Positive, negative, neutral? If it didn’t work, what has worked for your dog? Other NSAIDs or something else?
Angus has been on Previcox for about a year, I think (severe hip dysplasia), and he is doing as well as can be expected for a 9 year old Newfoundland with both hips out of their sockets and a torn ACL…
My vet felt we would have less concerns with this than with other drugs (fewer liver problems, etc). I like it but it’s pretty damned pricey- Angus takes 227 mg per day.
My 13-year-old shepherd/lab mix, Scout, has been on Rimadyl for about 3 years. It does her a lot of good. She splits a 100-mg chewable into two doses daily; the pills are about $45/month but well worth the results.
We also give her liquid glucosamine (Syn-Flex).
How much is the Previcox?
Our other two dogs are springers, and the springer we had before them also had some arthritis. It used to make me cringe in sympathetic pain to watch her go down the steps at the end. Give your poor baby a scritchie from me.
Guinness needs half of a 227mg per day. We are trying a 4 day test of it and the two pills were $11.00 but that was from the vet. If we end up keeping him on it, I can get them online for $1.50 ea in bulk so that would be $0.75 per day.
