Dog paw's are red from nibbling

My dog’s paws are red and sore so I took her to the vet

He says they are red from a combination of some kind of allergy with the outside grass (I’m guessing) and her nibbling /licking on them in response.

I was supposed to give benadril tablets and use baby wipes to wipe off her paws when she comes in, but they dont seem to be enough

Has anyone gone through this before? Suggestions?

I would recommend getting some hot spot spray. If the dog continues to aggravate the wound you may have to get something like Bitter Bitter, which is exactly as it sounds. One taste of that and your dog will probably leave the spot alone for good.

Ow! Poor pup. I don’t know whether the Bitter Bitter that markdash is suggesting would sting or not; but aloe vera always seems to work on these types of things, sassyfras. Also cold tea bags are good.

What type of dog do you have?

Check that there are no grass seeds between her toes. Also, sometimes they can develop an allergy to certain grasses, and particularly clover. See what’s around!

Has this reaction started since she’s been going to a new park or anything?

Dog boots!

We had a dog who was chewing the fur of her forelegs. Bitter Bitter did the job. After a few applications all we had to do was wave the bottle, and eventually just say the words ‘Bad dog medicine’.

Poor doggy, surprised the Benadryl didn’t work, maybe the dose needs to be upped?

My dog has a grass allergy, in addition to other environmental reactions*.

I have a Genesis topical steroid spray instead of a bitter spray. Your vet should be able to prescribe that. It helps heal the sore spots in addition to keeping the dog from chewing.

When giving a bath, use oatmeal shampoo and wash the paws specifically.

If the Benadryl doesn’t work, you could try a different allergy medicine. My dog responds better to Chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton) than Benadryl.

*: You can see the allergy test on her side in this picture. (No kittens were harmed in the making of said photo.)

I have had remarkable success, treating my dogs allergies, with a herbal remedy.

The vet who diagnosed him, said use OTC meds, pay for a very expensive test, pay for a yet more expensive serum for shots, give him shots, and it’s possible none of these will work. She sees lots of people with such dogs, yes it’s difficult, unfortunately all of the known treatments, promise no guarantee and most all have some detrimental side effects. I left the office in shock!

That began my research, I asked around, and other people with dogs with such issues confirmed what the vet had said. Then I started reading, every day, about dog allergies. On line, at the library. For months and months it went on. There were lots of theories, the side effects of some common treatments were truly endangering to the pets long term health, mostly kidney and liver damage, yikes.

I was so frustrated. I hated giving him the drugs, and I hated seeing him suffer.:frowning:

Months and months I researched, looking for an answer. I discovered shelters are full of dogs with allergies, people giving up pets because they can’t afford the vet bills and the animal is suffering.

Then I came upon a product that was being used by a lot of rescue shelters. Still extremely skeptical, I finally decided I’d give it a try. It was 100% herbal, based on Aruvedic (sp) medicine.

I am very happy to report it worked wonderfully. It was not cheap, (+ shipping to Canada from USA), but definitely cheaper than OTC, or a couple of vet visits!

I assure you that I do not work for them and have no interest in promoting the product, but it worked wonders for my boy. I’m not even suggesting it would work for all dogs. All I know is it works really well for mine.

I would recommend you do your own research, of course. But if you get really frustrated, with the OTC stuff, and the potential damage it does, to the dog, you may want to check it out for yourself.

It’s call Skin Eze, (don’t get the tablets, the herbs are bitter, after one dose your dog can smell it, in cheese, even, or hot dogs, stick to the capsules!), they have other products as well, but I have no experience with them.

Good luck, I feel for your dog!

I gave doggie the SkinEze stuff as you said, and having just checked, all the visible symptoms of her paws and underside are gone – she looks healthy.

So it works, and is like a miracle cure. Wow! You were right, puppy owes you one.
