Dogs and people.

I’m thinking in terms of your safety.

You may not want to make friends with the dog, but it’s a smart thing to do if you can.

If the dog learns you’re ok, then it will likely also accept guests when you escort them, as well.

Again, as long as the dog does stay on its own property, there’s not much you can do about it.

Yeah… Maybe so, but that’s how I feel about it. Obviously drawn out answers are not my strong suit.

Well I’m glad your hypothetical daughter isn’t really mutilated and I’m glad that you don’t advocate shooting all dogs, then, Janx. If it mauls or attacks you or your pets, then I could see killing it as a recourse. Since we are talking life or death situation…

I would like to offer these thoughts for your consideration. I have three dogs and I have walked them every morning for the past forever.
My dogs are not monsters but neither are they highly disciplined and well-behaved. They walk me at times. I have on countless occassions been charged by various “walk-about” dogs in the neighborhood. I should say, my dogs have been charged. I suppose these dogs are more interested in my dogs than me.

I have found that if I act in a dominate way, or show aggression… the other dogs back down. I walk with, believe it or not, three dogs, plastic bags, and an old fashioned shepherds crook style walking cane. The moment I see another dog, I stop and point the cane at them. If they walk toward me, I take a fast step or two toward them. I keep the cane pointed at them and I make eye contact with them. This could be very stupid but so far it has worked. I figure if another dog is so aggressive that it is going to attack me or my dogs after I go through this posturing process, it would have been my ass anyway. It’s not like I could out run a dog.
Lucky got attacked, (not so lucky) once before I started carrying the cane. He had to have about 15 stitches on his ear. I didn’t even realize the other dog had gotten him until I got inside and he started shaking his blood all over my wall. Ugh! I don’t know if this is the way you should go but… I wanted to offer something.
Another friend of mine used to feed hotdogs from the 7-11 to this pit bull so he could get out of his car to visit a friend. This was out in the country…I mean serious country, where folks have deer heads on their walls. We pulled up and these dogs were acting vicious. He just started to get out and I was like scared to death. He says "girl please, I give these dogs a hotdog from Jones Mini Mart once a week and they don’t bother me. He was right. I was scared anyway. But he was right. They just were greeting us. Still, I think you should take every legal action possible. Again, I am not sure this will work. It works for me.
