Someone been watching King of the Hill?
My dad picked up a stray black lab, about 8-9 months old, when I was growing up. <Actually the puppy followed my dad around a construction site for two days, putting his paws in all the new cement; my dad hid him and eventually just took him home>
My dad was a cop <for a short time, in Vermont; more Barney than Barnaby> and with 4 kids, the rule of the house was ’ no toy guns’. Water pistols were the exception <I have no idea why>.
Shortly after we got the dog, the neighborhood kids are outside playing with the water pistols. And the dog, Rex, was going to each kid that was pointing a pistol and gently gripping their wrists in his mouth until we let the gun drop. Then he’d take the gun, go put it in his doghouse, and go back to normal until someone else pointed a ‘gun’.
My dad did NOT teach him this.
Later on that summer, we noticed that he would growl at the postman when he wore his blue uniform…but that’s par for the course, right?
Except that he also would growl at any of the kids in the neighborhood, if they showed up in the yard wearing…a hat. Of any kind. And wouldn’t growl at any of them at any other time, even if we used him as a horse or whatever.
Don’t know where that little dog came from, but it was apparantly a place where cops were not enjoyed!
Baroo?
Yup, my owner is. She’s so prejudiced against chocolate, she eats every one in sight.
Taomist, question–were you okay with the dog doing that, or did you correct it? People aren’t explicitly saying that in the other thread, either (the one about owners with racist dogs), but I’m sort of getting the idea that the reaction is, “Oh, those wacky racist dogs” and no real correction of the dog.
Well, we didn’t allow the dog to KEEP going crazy at hats, but the kids just learned to not wear hats into the yard and also was never allowed outside AT the mailman. It was just weird that if the mailman was wearing shorts or no hat, the dog didn’t care at ALL. The wrist-gun thing…nope, didn’t stop him. If my dad COULD have taught him that, I think he would have!
And I didn’t even realize there was a racist dog thread; my bad. I should have pondered a little more at the title of this one.
Cecil’s at work on a column as we speak: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/announcement.php?f=4
Woof. If there’s steak in it for me I’ll say anything you want!
