DOJ/Jack Smith Investigation into Trump and Election Interference, January 6th Insurrection (Re-Indicted August 27, 2024)

I appreciate (I know all of us do) your level-headed legal eagle-ism (eagle-ity?). :sunglasses:

I think even Trump agrees that he can’t win in court and views winning the election as the only viable way to beat the charges. The video he put out begging Congress for help really shows how scared he is.

Assuming this is true (and I don’t doubt it for a second), how do you think he is going to cheat to ensure that he wins? Because, just as sure I believe the quoted text, I believe he will stop at nothing to guarantee a win. We all saw what he was willing to do the first time. He won’t wait until the last minute here.

Again with the fruit bread! [Emphasis mine.]

We’ll have fun on the stand with all of these people that say the Presidential Election wasn’t Rigged and Stollen

He has continued to insist that he was the rightful winner. He has a wide lead over his Republican rivals for the party’s nomination despite the specter of multiple criminal trials in an election year.

The post on Truth Social suggests he’ll use his claims as a defense in court to argue he did nothing wrong in trying to remain in office.

Yeah, my mom was the child of Hungarian immigrants, and my middle name was Suzanne. She sometimes called me Zsuzsika. I told her to never call me Zsa Zsa.

I am very impatiently awaiting indictments. Taps my foot…

Many of his competitors in the race have pledged to pardon him on day 1. So, he has options. But he can’t quite be sure.

LOL, well probably not all. The lawyers around here know way more than I do. (I can think of only one exception, and he’s gone now.)

I think there is a general trend in media at the moment to scare the hell out of the general population with the idea that if Trump wins another term, it’s curtains for democracy. I agree. What I have a problem with is shading the truth to accomplish it.

I don’t think this falls under any legal definition of fraud, but Trump will continue undermining our institutions all throughout the 2024 election. He’ll talk about the corrupt DoJ, FBI, and Biden, continue to claim he won the 2020 election, and complain about the media. If Putin is in any position to do so, I think he’ll try to sway American opinion as he did in 2016. As far as anything illegal Trump might do, as he’s no longer the sitting president, he doesn’t have the same power he did in 2020. He might try to lean on officials, but I think a lot of people are going to be on the look out for election shenanagins. And I don’t think any calls to violence on his part will be taken seriously by a significant number of people. A lot of his followers have found out the hard way that Trump will not help them when brass tacks on down.

“Revive”? Did he ever let it die?

Oh goody. Well he’ll be in a courtroom, so I’m sure he’ll also bring proof.

Not Johnny’s comments, but the link he posted.

If Trump takes the stand in any matter that Jack Smith brings forward, I’m sure that Smith will keep his questions narrow, and will drag Trump back to answer the question should he deflect into “stolen election” stuff. Something like the following:

Smith: Mr. Trump, in your speech at the Ellipse on January 6, you said, “fight like hell.” What did you mean by that?

Trump: Well, the Democrats cheated, and I won the election.

Smith: That’s not an answer to my question, Mr. Trump. What did you mean by “fight like hell” in your speech on January 6, 2021, at the Ellipse?

Trump: I won in a landslide! But corrupt election workers—

Smith: I’m not asking about the election. I’m talking about your speech on January 6. Answer that question, sir, and do not deflect.

Trump: But, but voting machines controlled by Venezuelans, and Italian software and …

Smith: Your Honour, can you make Mr. Trump answer my question? Because I can’t seem to.

This seems to be a weakness with almost anybody who talks to or debates Trump. Typically his respondents and opponents just allow him to go wherever he wants. Hopefully Smith will be allowed to exercise the required control (and I assume that he will).

Judges also generally don’t like it when a witness dodges questions like that, dragging out the trial with extraneous baloney, and will shut down such filibustering with instructions to the witness to answer what’s been asked. If Trump tries their patience far enough he’d be facing contempt of court. I’d also think the jurors would get sick of having their time of service wasted by his bombast.

In sum, it’s never a good idea for a party to piss off the judge and/or the jury with such shenanigans.

Yeah. It’s easy to laugh at Trump’s typical rambling non-answers when you’re watching a few minutes of video that you can stop any time you want. It’s another thing to be stuck in the room with him, with no pause or fast-forward button. If Trump plays his usual tricks, these people will get a front-row view of exactly how deranged he is.

They should probably get hazard pay.

I get your point (and agree). But generally a prosecutor wouldn’t ask an open ended question like that. He’d get Trump to admit he said, “fight like hell.” He get him to admit he knew some of people in the crowd were armed. And he’d get him to admit he told them to march down Pennsylvania Avenue (such a great avenue) to the Capitol. A skilled cross-examiner would perhaps take a chance and ask “what did you mean by that,” knowing there is no good answer, but you’re giving Trump a chance to say “I meant gather peacefully outside the capitol and chant so loud the Senators could hear.”

Every politician I’ve ever seen does that. Trump may be the most bombastic, but he’s hardly alone in dodging questions he doesn’t like.

Every politician does that in contexts like debates or press conferences. Most of them don’t try it in court, though.

Trump is going to reintroduce his compelling arguments about how the 2020 election was stolen from him? Well, I have to say, that sounds like a great strategy. “Sorry, Your Honor, I have no interest in talking about these things I’ve been charged with. I’d like to talk about myself instead and how I have been wronged.” Works all the time… on Ally McBeal.

Maybe the dancing baby was prophesizing Trump

grand jury and prosecutors have been spotted entering the court house. now we wait.
