I may be on a business trip near Milan soon, and be able to take some time off to do 4 or 5 day hike. I don’t mind sleeping in mountain hut dorms, but can afford something pricey as well. May end up signing up for a “solo” hike, where the tour agency does all teh booking and schleps your luggage around. But I’d rather do the more budget traveller thing that I’ve done my whole life.
First, any recommendations in the Dolomites that do not include ferratas? I’m 60+, had 8 staples in my head from Mt Rainier 3 years ago, and just don’t want to do any kind of hiking that requires a helmet and strapping into wires to scramble along the trail.
Second, same recommendation for somewhere closer to Milan. The ancient mule trail from Switzerland to Italy (Via Spluga to Lake Como) might be fun.
