Don Johnson's hairstyle

10 years later but hopefully someone is still reading this thread. I figured out the exact haircut (season 2 Miami Vice)… Here’s what you need to know…

  1. Check your bank account. Any walk in barber won’t have a clue how to cut your hair in that style, hence you need a stylist. It’s way more involved then you think, and I was shelling out almost $100.00 a haircut.

  2. Bring a picture. Most of the women at the place I went to were over 40 but just in case you get someone fresh out of beauty school, a picture will be necessary.

  3. The most obvious…grow you hair out. My hair grows fast, like I need a haircut every 2 weeks fast, and it took me 6 months to get the necessary length so be patient.

  4. The terms taper and even more importantly… FEATHER !!! Feathering is crucial, it lightens your hair so you can brush (not comb, brush) it back.

  5. The back needs to be just long enough to cover some of your collar, but the overall length is 98% the same all the way around.

  6. Buy a blow dryer, your hair needs to be “blown out” when styling, otherwise it will just fall flat. Just as important, buy a circular brush for the back. For most guys, when their hair gets long the back turns into a mullet style ski slope, you want the opposite. Use the circular brush, starting at just about middle ear height, then work your way down so the back is mostly straight with any slight curve being towards your neck.

  7. Product… Johnson used moose (mouse mousse ??) Good luck finding that. I used crew crème… and not a lot, the blow dryer should do most of the work blowing your hair back.

Just make sure your stylist doesn’t accidentally give you a *Dakota *Johnson 'do.

Does Don still have any hair left after all this time?

Surprisingly yes, now is all of it real… no clue, but Johnson’s still rocking a full head of hair

It’s interesting how this thread started before smartphones took off. “Print out and bring a picture.”

It’s not phony. It’s real hair. Of course, it’s not mine, but it’s real.

Damn. Even in a post-apocalyptic wasteland he had pretty hair. Some of his later dos are truly nightmarish. The guy is a mutant.

Yea just about any hairstyle he had after season 2 of Miami Vice was a little out there. Watch the season two opening two parter and that’s the style I went with… I’m actually starting to regret getting it cut now… but damn was it expensive to keep it going
