Trump’s newest proposal is eliminating taxes on overtime pay. Will that be popular enough to help him?
Outside of the folks who will already crawl over broken glass to vote for him? I don’t see why this would help - to the rest of us it’s just another one of his “we have a concept of a plan, you’re going to hear much more about it in two weeks” bullshit claims that he’d never follow through on anyway.
He also claims he’ll end taxing of social security benefits.
Will it help Trump? A little. An irresponsible populist can always outpromise a candidate from the real world.
Interviewers (both will be doing interviews going forward) should ask how the goodies will be paid for. Harris will say tax the rich, which is fairly popular. With luck, Trump will start taking about pets again.
I’m not sure that enough people work enough overtime such that no taxes would really make that big of a difference. With the proposal to not tax tips, that could generate a lot of support since a lot of people count on tips for their income. But overtime is typically an occasional event and people generally don’t like working overtime. In any case, it’s probably better to have an economy where employers hire sufficient staff so that no one has to work overtime. I’m not sure we really want to have tax breaks that encourage employees to work overtime rather than have the company hire more people.
Trump has brought on Laura Loomer as staff for his campaign. For those unfamiliar with this piece of human garbage, the NYT article describes her thusly:
“A far-right activist known for her endless stream of sexist, homophobic, transphobic, anti-Muslim and occasionally antisemitic social media posts and public stunts, Ms. Loomer has made a name for herself over the past decade by unabashedly claiming 9/11 was “an inside job,” calling Islam “a cancer,” accusing Ron DeSantis’s wife of exaggerating breast cancer and claiming that President Biden was behind the attempt to assassinate Mr. Trump in July.”
Even supporters are appalled by this move. Real classy, Donny.
What is the logic, if any, behind the idea of not taxing tips? If it’s considered income, why should servers not pay taxes on their income, while salary and wage workers do pay taxes?
He thinks people who work for tips are all poor people, so they’ll be grateful for whatever scraps he gives them.
Also, CEOs can exploit it by redefining huge bonuses as “tips”.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between the MSM and the Onion:
On Monday, for example, Mr. O’Handley uploaded an image of Mr. Trump astride a giant cat as he held an AR-15-style rifle.
The last two posts by Mr. Trump on Truth Social before the debate were A.I. images of cats and ducks; one depicted cats in military fatigues carrying assault rifles and wearing MAGA hats; the other showed the candidate himself sitting on a plane amid a crowd of ducks and cats.
It’s just rumors at this point, but tongues are wagging about how much time Loomer is spending with Trump, including overnight stays at Merde-a-Lardo. They seem closer than would be expected between a candidate and an advisor, as seen in pics like these. Apologies in advance for the disturbing nature of these images:
Honestly, it’s the most genuine affection I think I’ve seen out of him. He seems to have a genuine connection with her that I don’t see from him when he’s with his wife, kids or anyone else. The images remind me of Gary Hart and Donna Rice:
Loomer is making many enemies with her acerbic personality. If there’s something going on, I would expect that many of her enemies would revel in exposing her to bring her down. Of course, there would likely be some effect to Trump if there’s something going on and it comes to light. Although honestly, I’m not sure that it would hurt him with his supporters. They’d probably take up the slogan, “Real men have affairs.” But I do think it could help Harris’ support with women as they would be even more motivated to cast their vote to take Trump down. Again, this is just rumor and speculation at this point.
I saw the same thing along with reports that Melania is spending most of her time in NYC.
I wonder how many Trump supporters will turn against Melania and blame her lack of affection for this affair?
When Marjorie Taylor Greene calls you out for being too extremist:
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has feuded with Loomer before, also denounced her “curry” comments. Greene called the post, which has since been removed for violating X’s rules, “appalling and extremely racist,” and later said she’d called Trump about the matter.
(Plus healthy heapings of the standard Trump line “I don’t know much about what she posts.”)
Trump sure isn’t doing anything to refute the rumors;
“She doesn’t work for me, she’s just a beautiful young woman who travels everywhere with me and sleeps in my house at night”. Suuuuuuuuuuuuure.
I just saw his latest show up on CNN, defending his debate performance: Karoline Leavitt.
She meets all the criteria for a Trump aide: young, female, good body.
Everyone knows he’s a repeat adulterer. And AFAIK, Trump in not a moralist when it comes to adultery. Under those circumstances, I think criticism of him for possible adultery is a bad idea. Let him have reasonable privacy.
What about guilt by association with a bigot? My answer: I’m only concerned with his own bigotry. People aren’t making bomb threats in Springfield Ohio, shutting down schools for two days so far, because of what Laura Loomer says. They are doing it because Trump and Vance are stirring up hated in a town that, like any, has challenges but mostly seems to be an immigration (and racial integration) success story.
The man running for POTUS should have privacy to have an affair in secret? Interesting idea.
How does Trump figure the situation is helped by clarifying that she’s not working for the campaign?
This only raises questions about why she’s flying on his jet and appears to be in physical body contact with him in a number of photos. If she were a campaign worker, that might explain part of it. But he insists that she isn’t!
The press gave it to JFK. Did that hurt the country?
But this case is different. JFK being outed as an adulterer would have hurt him politically because Americans were more moralistic about marriage then. Outing Trump as a current adulterer would help him by giving a sympathy vote, and it would seriously reassure uncertain voters afraid he is too old. .
P.S. On second thought, this is one where I could be totally wrong. It would be crazy to me that the straw which broke the Trump spell was him doing one more time what everyone knows he does. But people are funny.
