Donald Trump and the runup to the 2024 election

Fair enough. Your kindness is appreciated – but I suggest we be clear and unequivocal about false claims of “overturning elections,” so that when there really are attempts to do this (by Republicans, on and around January 6, 2021, being the only recent example I am aware of), it’s taken seriously.

Your point is taken, but I’m trying to find the origin of their paranoia. For them to single out Raskin in particular indicates (to me, anyway) something specific that he said that would lead them to this delusional conclusion.

Got it. Yes, I’m curious about that as well (in part as an election poll worker myself – in my state we call them “chief inspectors”). “Overturning election” is complete bullshit, of course. So, what is this about?

From a quick Google search, maybe that Raskin (and fifty million others) urged Biden to drop out, about a month ago…and this is in some sense (arguably) going against the will of primary voters from earlier this year? If this is it, man that’s weak sauce.

Thank you.

My apologies. I assumed that anyone who’s paid attention to the politics below the presidential level would have been familiar with Raskin and his ongoing battles with James Comer and Marjorie Taylor Green and the other MAGA contingents in the Congress.

No probs! There’s a lot going on and hard to keep track of it.

Following US politics is my equivalent of sudoku - mental exercise to keep the brain working!

Trump’s press conference is going on now. He says that he’s “agreed” to three debates in September on NBC, ABC and Fox, but doesn’t say who he’s agreed with. The Harris campaign? The networks? Himself?

On the one hand, it doesn’t matter.

But, generally, last year there was a minor “swell” of people saying Trump was disqualified to hold office under the 14th Amendment for engaging in an insurrection. Raskin, and several others. They said it on CNN, small speeches, etc.

Make of that what you will, but it has now recently turned into Raskin is going to use Congress to remove Trump if he wins the election.

My bet is on Trump saying Harris is not constitutional (ie, you can’t just switch Harris for Biden this late). Ridiculous, but he did say it today at his press conference and I imagine he’ll keep saying it. He seems to like it…

He’s said it enough that he seems to be a big Joe Biden fan. What he hasn’t said was what part of the constitution it’s supposed to be against.

Is Trump even campaigning anymore? I saw Vance talking at a police station parking lot to about 100 people (mostly staff and media) yesterday in Shelby Township, MI, but does Trump do anything these days? Besides rolling out of bed and hoping the press shows up?

Well, he had a press conference at Mar-a-Lago today. He was his usual babbling self, including saying that the 1/6/21 crowd was larger than King’s ‘I Have A Dream’ speech crowd. Don’t know if that counts as campaigning.

Trump compares January 6 crowd to MLK’s ‘I Have A Dream’ audience: ‘We had more people’ (msn.com)

Also he is scheduled for Montana tomorrow.

Trump did seem to have a light schedule this week.

I guess you could say he is campaigning less because he is an old man. Everyone knows he is old, just as everyone knows he is weird. You don’t win an election by holding rallies attended by people who already are for you.

Yeah, he rolled out of bed and ranted and raved on his front porch for an hour. He’s barely trying anymore. If he wasn’t a fucking sociopath, I might think he has PTSD.

He does! He got shot in the head a few weeks ago! And he’s never going to seek out any kind of mental health help for it so all he can do is get mad and blame everybody else.

The Secret Service won’t let him do outdoor rallies anymore, and indoor venues want to be paid up front.

Well, it’s good that these people are raising the alarm about Trump. After he’s already been President and far into his reelection campaign.

I think it’s important to note that Trump doesn’t know any other way of campaigning except for rallies. He’s not the type to go out doorknocking on houses in Anytown, USA, and I don’t blame him (security risks) but, what else does he do besides rallies?

We saw this in 2020, when Trump supporters were saying, “Biden’s not campaigning! He’s not holding rallies, like Trump is!” Trump had conditioned them to think that rallies were the only way to campaign. Forget downballot candidates and lower-level functionaries who could do doorknocking. To Trump, rallies were campaigning. If Biden didn’t do rallies, he wasn’t campaigning.

If Trump is throttled by being unable to campaign (using his definition of the term, i.e. with rallies), then he has only himself to blame.

To his credit, he did try to host a press conference on Thursday morning at Mar-a-Lago in furtherance of his campaign, but I don’t think it went too well for him. He’s not good at press conferences; I suppose that instead of softball questions lobbed by Fox News hosts in a controlled setting, he’s hit with all kinds of questions from all kinds of journalists from all kinds of sides. He doesn’t know what’s coming next, and he doesn’t like it.

So if the Secret Service says “No more outdoor rallies,” and (just for an example) Madison Square Garden won’t let him walk in the building without paying up front, then he’s stuck. He doesn’t know what to do, because he doesn’t know any other way to campaign.

I don’t believe this, because if it were true he would be absolutely ranting on social media about how Biden and Harris are undermining his campaign.

I’ve seen news articles that say that the Secret Service is strongly discouraging outdoor rallies. Their main argument is: “We don’t want you to get shot, Mr Trump.” I think that would be a compelling argument for him.

He also might not want to get shot at again.
