The fact that they were following orders in general is a problem in itself, but it went beyond that.
There were several instances of police on the scene simply refusing to enforce even the laws they’d been allowed to enforce.
Police have spent their days threatening to enforce laws and then standing politely aside as the “Freedom Convoy” makes them look silly.
They announced that they would cut off the fuel resupply of trucks downtown, but when guys wheeled in jerry cans and said it’s just drinking water, that was just fine, thank you.
And in the face of all of this, with our police waving the trucks and fuel along and posing for souvenir photos with drivers, it is the ordinary citizens of Ottawa who took to the streets and put their bodies in front of truck convoys Sunday as police told them not to.

A lawyer representing some organizers of the “Freedom Convoy” says police were regularly leaking operational plans and other information to protesters in Ottawa during last winter’s demonstrations.
There were a lot of local reports of police tacitly helping them out as well, but not much of that made it into the news.

No, the assumption is that the Harris campaign will create a deepfake video of Trump saying something so extreme it will actually move the needle on what MAGAs will tolerate (a threshold that I don’t personally thin even exists).
Fair points. I honestly don’t think giving the Nazi salute would make one iota of difference - the media has been flooded with eye witnesses from inside the Trump admin about how much Trump admires Hitler, wants generals like Hitler’s generals (hilarious, since they all tried to murder him a bunch of times), etc., and it just seems to be falling on deaf ears (or not falling on any ears, since Fox News doesn’t touch that story line). Threatening social security could, but I don’t really think the people currently voting for him would believe it.
Using the n-word would be the most detrimental. He’s done better with African American votes than previous Republicans - he’d lose some of those votes, and it would spur more GOTV for that demographic.
Maybe if there was tape of him making fun of MAGAs and how they’re all a bunch of gullible morons? He’d have to really ramp up the cruelty and offensiveness.
Honestly, I can think of exactly one thing that would definitely turn the cult against Trump;

Maga, like most fascist movements throughout history, is OBSESSED with superficial, performative masculinity, and the idealized image of the Perfect Man as strong, muscular, and above all virile. Trump gets a pass on most of that because he’s not of an age where one is expected to perform feats of athleticism, and he’s able to hide behind his self-created image as an amazing golfer and the hagiographic AI-generated photos his fans make of him, but if, as Stormy Daniels and E. Jean Carroll tell us, he does in fact have a gross little baby dick, and there were incontrovertible photographic proof of it, it would destroy his image as an Alpha Male and the Andrew Tates and Alex Joneses and Elon Musks and Joe Rogans of the world would ditch him as the pathetic little beta boy he is.

I don’t think it’ll move the needle much, the Trump campaign will lie and scream fake news and Fox will refuse to cover it. Anyway, Michael Cohen wrote about Trump ogling and making sexual remarks about his then 15 year old daughter and no one noticed or cared.
Now, if the campaign donor responded by giving his underaged daughter to Trump for the night and there’s physical evidence, MAYBE that would be a story that might move the needle. Probably not, though.
I think that this is the crux of it. Any story that one could possibly imagine, that in a normal world would doom a candidate, simply won’t do it in the case of Trump: he and his fans will simply cry, “fake news!”, insist that it’s AI-fueled dirty tricks by the other side, and it won’t cost him any support.
Honestly, I don’t think it would cost him support even if the evidence of him groping an underage girl was irrefutable. (Well, for certain values of underage.) His supporters see the Access Hollywood tape, the porn star banging, the multiple sexual assault allegations as evidence of Trump’s virility. They don’t exactly like the conduct, but it’s just what you have to accept from someone as forceful and manly as him. The most damaging thing that could happen to him would be video of him admitting he couldn’t maintain an erection.
Which is why I say a dick pic is the one thing that would demolish his cult of personality. While I am certainly not advocating violence or saying that some patriotic American should pull down Trump’s pants onstage and reveal his shriveled penis and balls to the world, it would certainly be a net positive if his pants were to spontaneously betray him and fall down on their own volition.
