On the flip side, lots of people also don’t realize that the Ellis Island days are over, and that legal immigration is way harder than waiting in a literal line and getting a piece of paper stamped. Which informs their views of illegal immigrants, because they assume that anyone who comes in illegally must necessarily be either too lazy to wait for an hour to get in at San Ysidro, or such a hardened criminal that they’d be turned back.
You ask these questions as if any thought had been given to consequences, or any sort of practical realities ; instead of assuming those words were written because the President had bad Taco Bell (but I repeat myself) that day.
A lot of people, (including many U.S. citizens), live on the Mexican side and work on the U.S. side–they commute over the border daily. So I guess those people would either become homeless or jobless.
Calling it crazy gives him too much credit, (because crazy people mean what they say). Like everything Trump does, it needs to be called out for what it is: a bullshit act, a dog-and-pony show performance, solely meant to pander to the idiots who think such a step would be good for them. If he actually does it, it won’t be because he gives a shit about anything, or because he’s crazy, but just to present a bullshit public image.
When has that jackass ever accepted he looks incompetent?
That logic is flawed. Those people don’t want immigrants at all, through any method. So that is like finding it ironic that people bar their windows while not leaving their door open.
I’m not an “no immigration at all” person, but how would it work to make entry easy and legal for everone that wants to come here? Should we absorb another 50 million destitute unskilled laborers? 100 million? Isn’t it okay to say that only so many people are allowed to come in, and that you don’t get to sneak in just because you really, really want to?
Maybe he’ll “close” isolated stretches of border just to claim he closed the border and leave major ports of entry open. Remember, Mexico is gonna pay for all this.
If only it was that! The process doesn’t end upon gaining entry; you need to “stay legal” for years, and may at times find yourself improperly documented simply because the US Government came up with requirements that are incompatible with each other (it happened to me and I’m no illiterate campesino). You may also fail at some point because someone misspelled your name in a document, or because a government database doesn’t recognize your address. Depending on which path to immigration you took, you’re completely dependent on your SO (may (s)he stay in good health until your paperwork is finished) or your employer.
Many of us aren’t saying “anybody who wants in should be able to come in”, but we are saying “can we make the process something which doesn’t eat years off people’s lives just from the stress?” (and yes, I’m saying it to the Spanish government too; I realize yours doesn’t give a shit about my opinion).
I agree. Trump will claim he won regardless of what he does and what the outcome is. It’s other people who will see the incompetence.
Vox populi vox dei. From your mouth to god’s ears
Please do it, Trump. I’d love to see Texas’ economy collapse just in time for the 2020 election. That’d be awesome.
Trump is cutting assistance to Central America that was meant to provide stability and prosperity in because there were too many people fleeing instability and poverty. I assume his next step will be to tackle child hunger by cutting off school lunch programs to punish those parents who don’t give their children enough to eat at home.
This is just another example that all he cares about is optics–cheap political theater. Obviously if he actually cared about illegal immigration, he would continue efforts to stop the problem where it starts. But his supporters are too simple minded to get that, so he just cuts that funding because it makes him look “tough.”
Indeed, his racist supporters don’t actually care that cutting assistance will only make their situation more dire and put more pressure on the southern border; they just like the optics of making brown people suffer. Wouldn’t be surprised if he ultimately gives the military the go-ahead to open fire on ‘invaders’ crossing the border.
Well, this Salvadoran-American can tell you that in my opinion now Trump is welcoming China to help him in his reelection like he told Russia before.
In essence that is one result when we realize that in El Salvador a new more centrist president was elected, removing the very leftist president that was getting close to Venezuela, Cuba and China. While it was the corruption that convinced many to not vote for the right wing Arena party and the left wing FMLN, the new president was seen also as a break from the past and those extremes and corruption.
Now Trump has left the upcoming president Bukele (who will become president in a month) who would had been a great break with the past, (and I say that as a guy that supported the FMLN) and essentially will now get the blame for the upcoming economical fallout.
It was expected then that Bukele was going to stop or limit the growing relations with Venezuela Cuba and China, now with the removal of aid from Trump I think that those moves that would help the USA in the long run will not take place, and El Salvador will accelerate their connections and be open to more aid with strings attached from the US rivals.
And I have not mentioned yet the obvious result of the fallout, more people leaving to the USA. Nice work breaking it “hero” Trump! /s *
That is the bit that I see as important here, you can disregard the rest, reading further can make you lose your whole day checking all trope links. .
If they’re even smart enough to figure out that they would be hurting themselves in the first place. Most people like that don’t.
Nope, they sure don’t; instead they turn around like Alex Jones and make up shit-ass excuses and justifications to explain their nastiness when “I guess I’m just an asshole, and I don’t want to change” would suffice.
Trump Mocks Asylum Seekers, Adam Schiff and [Checks Notes] the Wind in Michigan
*The president is milking the Mueller report for all it’s worth, but immigration is still his bread and butter

A viewer on The Young Turks show the other day pointed out that “I was afraid for my life” is the phrase that police use when they shoot someone, even those who aren’t armed.
I guess in those situations it’s an OK justification to use, but not for asylum seekers fleeing violent countries.
You know what else is a big, fat con job?
Trump. (The psychological projection about himself is uncanny.)
The innocent, the desperate and the helpless. Has he ever screwed up in a way that afflicts the comfortable?
Som Trump thinks a bixer can outfight a machinegun? Seriously, how us that jackass alive?
I can’t believe that no one, like a news team or the Mexican media, has called him out on his brazen hypocrisy on this front.
Fact is, each time he cancels Temp Spec VISA program, (which he now has for a few different nationalities), several thousands of those affected, and at risk of being returned to life threatening circumstance, head for, and then pass illegally into, Canada!
The US makes zero attempt to even slow them down. They come in American cabs, televised, while US border guards look on and do zip.
(In case it needs to be said, I’m very glad they will find safety, of course!) But the hypocrisy of calling on Mexico to stop those passing through their country to get to America while the US looks the other way, and does EXACTLY that to it’s northern neighbour deserves to be broadcast LOUD in my humble opinion.
Hasn’t even been mentioned on the news.
