donating to international orgs to help hunger and poverty

If I want to donate money (not a lot, but what I can) to an international organization in order to help with hunger, poverty, disease, etc, which is the best?

I don’t want to waste my money. I know that many of these organizations spend so much on overhead, advertising, etc that a small percent of your money goes to help the people who need it.

What do you reccomend?

Or should this thread go in IMHO?

Im not sure what you mean by international organizations. The first thing that pops into my mind is profit. In New York City alone there are over 100,000 homeless people. You should give it to a small non profit group that helps people in the country, or state in which you reside. I’m not saying to let everyone else suffer, but like you said you only have a small amount to give. Mind as well help your neighbors!

Off to IMHO.

Oxfam have a big presence in the UK (i.e. high street shops in most towns etc.) and I don’t recall ever hearing about scandals involving fraud.

Their US site can be found here.

I have been sponsoring a little girl in the Philippines for about 10 years now through an organization called Children International. It’s only $15 per month and you can have it drawn directly from your bank account.
You can select a country from a list and whether you want to sponsor a boy or a girl. They will send you an information packet with the child’s biography and photograph. Each year I recieve an updated photo and it’s very gratifying to watch her grow up and see the smile on her face get bigger and bigger. Knowing I helped feed, clothe, and educate her is very rewarding. It’s like they used to say in the old Peace Corps ads: “You won’t change the world. But you won’t leave it the same either”.
