"Don't blame me, I voted for _____"

The 1876 election comes down to whether or not you thought it was fair for whites in the South to disenfranchise African-American voters and send all their states in to the Democratic column or was it better for Republicans to conveniently find a way to not count some of the votes in South so their candidate could win (and even more conveniently, changing the vote of one elector in Oregon.)

The election of 1876 was not exactly the Democrats or Republicans finest hour.

Three of the Republican electoral votes were provided by Colorado, just admitted to the Union in August of that year. But they held no election; it’s legislature didn’t pick the elector either. Three electors were simply picked and their votes added to Hayes’ total.


Wrong thinking is punished, right thinking is just as swiftly rewarded. You’ll find it an effective combination.
