Don't Cry For Me Next Door Neighbor??

So I’m listening to some random tunes swiped from years past and finally experience “Tubthumping”. Hmm, not bad at all!

So the first time Chumbawamba sing about how “he sings songs that remind him of the good times / he sings songs that remind him of the bad times”, the example-sing that follows is “Danny Boy, Danny Boy, Danny Boy”…yep, we know about that one…

Then the next time Chumbawamba sing about how “he sings songs that remind him of the good times / he sings songs that remind him of hte bad times”, the example-sing that follows is “Don’t Cry For Me, Next Door Neighbor” --??

What the heck is that??

I get knocked down!

Just a joke maybe?

Weren’t allowed to use the full line “don’t cry for me Argentina” (not likely)?

Probably just a little band joke I reckon.

A parody of Madonna’s Peron song, and richly deserved at that.

I get knocked down,
But I get up again!
They’re never gonna keep me down!
-Words to live by.

Sounds like one that’ll get moved to the Cafe…

A more in depth analysis that probably goes further than they ever intended:

  • Chumbawamba are left-wing anarchists formed during the 1980s. So it’s a reference to the Falkland’s War, i.e. Britain vs Argentina. Thatcher’s most obscene highpoint and definitely a ‘bad time’ for left wingers.
  • It’s a reference to good solid left-wing idealology; we are all comrades and Argentina’s citizens are just our global “next door neighbours”.
  • If they had completed the phrase it would probably be copyright infringement. Chumbawamba have a history of ‘borrowing’ other’s lyrics and music for use in their own songs. But, hey, property is theft, y’know?

we are all comrades . . . except for those who own any property who are thiefs.
