I wonder how much of that is attributable to low self-confidence held by the “plain” people. If someone’s negative perception of him or herself is reinforced repeatedly, perhaps he or she won’t try for that new job, won’t push for a promotion, et cetera.

That’s what I would think. Also, someone who is better looking, or is perceived that way by society, would probably be more assertive and self-confident and would dare to try for the new job or promotion.

Size matters, too. A study released last year by two professors at the University of Florida and the University of North Carolina found that tall people earn considerably more money throughout their careers than their shorter coworkers, with each inch adding about $789 a year in pay.

Keep in mind that the same study (and many like it) also show that infants, who presumably haven’t been indoctrinated into the rat race, exhibit signs of preference for a ‘pretty’ face.

It’s not all just about self-esteem folks. There’s a goodly part of nature in this.

I don’t disagree with that. Some of it is nature. I know for a fact that I was hired for one particular job simply for the way I looked. Don’t ask me how I know, it’s a long story. :rolleyes:
But, someone who has high self-esteem is more likely to make themselves look attractive whereas someone with low self-esteem won’t even bother because they don’t think they can look attractive.
So esteem effects appearance and vice-versa. It’s a vicious cycle, I tell ya.
