I’ve got plenty of humanity. Only towards the living do I have humanity. Dead people are dead, so they don’t matter. I wouldn’t have gone through his pockets of anything, that’s theft from the rightful heir.
In some jurisdictions, paramedics can pronounce on scene. I would assume that’s the case in the story.

People pay alot for membership to a 24-hour gym. Most people have jobs, a routine, perhaps even families, and may only have a small window of time budgeted for their workout. If they’re paying for the service, they should be able to get it. They’re paying for the privilege of being able to workout at a time that fits their schedule, so they did. Closing the gym for a couple hours would have been a great inconvenience to their paying customers, so I don’t blame them for not doing so. It’s not like closing the gym would have brought the dead body back to life.
“Hey, do you mind if I work in here?”
“What? Over my dead body … urk. (plop)”
“Okay, if you say so.”
This is my favorite part of the longer story:
" Martinez said some club members were working out within 5 feet of the body.
Martinez went to the far end of the room, she said, but couldn’t exercise because she was shaken.
“They should have kicked everyone out and closed that gym,” Martinez said. “There wasn’t any kind of warning when you walked in. It was a kind of like ‘it doesn’t really matter’ attitude.” "
Hmmm…yet she stayed even after noticing the body!! I don’t understand people.
well, from the self-important, callous posts in this thread, it doesn’t suprise me.
C’mon folks, this was a part of the 24 Hour Fitness chain.
The one in our shopping center didn’t miss a moment when 3 guys were shot in a drive-by 4 feet from their front door.
They locked the front doors and posted people at the fire doors to let members in. And they griped because bulletholes and blood got all over the manager’s new car, and “the city didn’t do anything about it, just impounded the car for 48 hours.”
They also complained because the city washed the blood outta the parking lot, and the overspray on the windows left waterspots.
For the people who don’t think working there was a good idea, what would not working out accomplish? It will not bring the guy back to life. Should we close down roads when there is a accident that results in death? Or how about we close hosptials everytime someone dies. What? You came in here for an ear infection? Don’t you know a man just died!
A dead body’s not gonna hurt you, you know. And it’s not like people stepped on him or did anything directly disrespectful.
…I’m going to hell…
I guess if some poor guy in a restaurant went face down in his dinner, some of our members would keep on chomping. Some of them might even take the guy’s dinner rolls–he ain’t gonna be using them. Besides, a lot of folks only have a few minutes for dinner. Why should they leave just because some guy croaked at the table next to them? The guy who owns the place needs his profits, so you can’t blame him for keeping it open. So long as he doesn’t barbeque the dead guy and run a family night special, what’s the harm?
I think a few posters in this thread have violated the “don’t be a jerk” rule. Or maye I’ve just been whooshed.
We do. We at least close off the area so that the police/paramedics can do their jobs and properly care for the body of the deceased. I can’t fathom comparing the body to a slab of bacon; true, the body is lifeless, but out of respect for the dead and for the family of the dead as well as respect for the event that has just occurred, give the deceased some space. Maybe I’m just old-fashioned though, but I still stop in traffic when funerals go by. Most people in my town do, although occasionally you get callous pricks who don’t, but we all get in their way to force them to stop. I thought that was just a southern thing, but here in jolly old England I’ve seen it as well. Maybe it only still occurs in places where people still value life and respect each other. Hmph.
I’m really surprised by the non-chalant attitude toward the dead here. Yes, the gym should have closed. Without question. People have schedules to keep? Whaaaa??? Ask not for whom the bell tolls, people. Give some respect.
A few years ago, a student in the middle school wing of the high school where I taught died of a heart defect in the middle of class. The whole school was sent home and was canceled the next day as well. I would not have had it any other way.
Please please please tell me I’ve just been whooshed as well. I’ll feel so much better about humanity if I have.
Bah, Americans.
In the UK we wouldn’t leave a body lying. No, we spend half an hour running around with it and get a great sitcom episode out of out.
Amateurs.
Thank you thank you thank you shrew
whoops, posted too early.
I was beginning to think I had fallen into a really bad movie filled with uncaring, callous, egocentric pod people.
I mean really people. Oh no, they only had a few minutes to eat? They pay a lot of money for their gym membership? The pathetic justifications for lack of respect are astounding.
thatDDperson’s story is a scary example of where this kind of attitude leads. Of course, many people in this thread probably see nothing wrong with it.
Well, I think that some posters in this thread have been pretty disgusting…but I assumed that thatDDperson really was whooshing us. Still, I doubt it would surprise me if it was a true story. Is this what we’re all reduced to? Is having the perfect tan, the plastic well toned ass of all well toned asses, and no wrinkles that might offend the eye finally separated us from the rest of humanity? That’s all we are. Animals consuming, trying to make our shitty bodies into what they’re not because we’re so frightened of being human. The people who stayed and exercised are commodities. They can be bought and sold, and yes, some might have had no idea it was a dead corpse lying there. But those who did and stayed? Nothing more than commodities. No more real than the body five feet away from them. Disgusting.
No whoosh.
Just a wealthy suburban location with wealthy suburbanites and totally thoughtless management.
It was also a minority-victim drive by, perpetrated by other minorities. They REALLY weren’t concerned.
The victims weren’t going to be missed at the club or at bunco parties, so it didn’t matter. Just some “trash that came off the freeway exit” according to one spectator.
But it did spoil the holiday spirit of the weekend…
wonder if some of the posters to this thread happen to live in that neighborhood.
That’s horrible! I love it.
Oh wow. Scary. Very very scary. Houston, huh? But I guess it could have happened anywhere, anywhere where there are people this horrifyingly callous.
