I hate to sound so namby-pamby in the Pit, where I know I’m supposed to argue strenuously and possibly throw in a few gratuitous insults just for fun, but I’m having trouble working up outrage. It’s been a fun discussion, and all in good faith on my part.
Since it is the Pit, I’ll close with a random insult from James Kirkland, not directed at anyone in particular: You diseased son of a three-legged camel!
Lol, no, it’s very relevant, for the internet is a place where you can post ‘I love petting puppies’ and invariably get a ‘why do you like to murder kittens?’ response.
Mr Guy called me this weekend. At the end of the call, I got Sophia a free months rent on top of the above. We then confirmed by text, and then I sent the agreement to U-Haul, thanking them and letting them know nothing else needed to be done.
What bugs me is that it seems to loop right back to the notion that women should not advocate for themselves. If they are, they’re being bitchy. Men can bull their way through life, being domineering, intimidating and ruthless, and get elected President. Yet have you ever heard of a disgruntled male customer being told “Shut up, Donald”?
No, but now that you’ve mentioned it, let’s see if we can get it started!
Not really. I also disllike the idea of using someone’s name, especially a common enough name, as an insult. Adding in that the insult is using a women’s name as the insult and it’s sexist. There are plenty of perfectly useful words to use to convey the idiocy of today’s idiots without going down that path.
I do wonder how many women named Karen are currently going by nicknames?
“And this is my wife Kar…”
“Hi, I’m Karebear!” “Umm, when did…”
“Karebear? Oh, it’s an old nickname, he started calling me that when we were dating.” “I … did? Oh, of course! We used to, umm, watch the cartoon together, on dates…”
It’d be something if there was data on Karens changing their names, but it’s too soon for that. But I bet there are ZERO babies being given the name.
I have a cousin named Karen. She is both an excellent human being, and also a wealthy woman who uses her privilege to make the world a better place. I’m quite certain the meme is intended to put people like her in their place, which is to say, she’s a woman, so she should be powerless.
karen is the scandinavian version of katherine. there are many, many, karens. in the 50’s and 60’s it was popular in the u s as a substitute for katherine. now caitlin (gaelic) is the popular one.
It had declined in popularity well before it was used for the stereotype. In fact, I believe a big part of the reason that specific name got attached to the stereotype in the first place is because it’s associated with women of a particular age.
Lazy admins. This is why I hate “Zero Tolerance” or “mandatory suspension”. Takes any personal insight out of it.
One of my sons was bullied in grade school. One day, he decked the bully. No punishment for my son; principal talked to bully’s parents.
Probably both.
I work with a Boy Scout group. We have a storage locker. The price on it doubled in less than 5 years. This is not uncommon. Their business model is “get them in here; if they’re here longer than 6 months, we’ve got them hooked and we can charge whatever we want.”
I have long said that insurance companies don’t make money by paying claims, they make money by not paying claims. You didn’t jump through the right hoops? You get nothing.
I can’t help but think that the execs of large public companies hate the internet. When UPS destroyed packages I was sending to Africa for a charity, I emailed every UPS honcho I could find, and got response quickly, even if it was multiple lackeys calling me to ask that THEY (lackey) be my point of contact.
