DON'T Stump the Guy with Average Knowledge, Part II

…interesting…

ok, Guessing from last name alone I’m going with

  1. Morse Code

  2. yikes! I wish I could logically deduce an answer from this given the key words and dates in your question. I’m thinking it’s something small but powerful (sorta like the cotten gin). But for the life of me, I just can’t think what. I really have no idea how cattle was run in the late 19th century. I’m thinking along the lines of feed. GAH! This is maddening. Pff… grain silo? :smack:

  1. Yup. Though I was thinking the telegraph when I posed the question.

  2. So close. So very close. You’re right it’s a very simple thing that changed a lot over the years since then. And yet, so far, too.

Glidden recieved his patent for barbed wire. It was the first wire fencing that could stand up to cattle, because they wouldn’t just lean on it til the wire snapped. Prior to this, keeping cattle on land meant sturdy wood or stone fences which were hugely labor and resource intensive.

Rats, again - I’m back to 0 points. Oh, well.

Let’s see, something completely different to try to get some points back. Let’s go with mythology.

Everyone knows that Zeus was Athena’s father. Who was her mother? (two points)

In Norse myth, who or what is Mjolnir? (two points)

Finally, Beowulf is one of the oldest surviving epics. It describes three combats from the hero’s life. Name (or describe) any two of his opponents. (one point each, for two points total.)

Oh man, I believe I’m about to put you in the hole…

  1. Persephone?

  2. No idea!

  3. If only we would have covered that story in HS English. If only you had asked this after the questionable Zemeckis movie comes out. I do know it has something to do with his Mom. Or something. I don’t really know the story, but other than himself, his mom is the only other character I know, so I’ll guess her. (so ashamed :frowning: )

Oh, fun!

  1. Name 5 breeds of horse. (2 pts)

  2. What book has “Don’t Panic” written in big letters on the cover? (2 pts)

  3. How do animals get tapeworms? (2 pts)

  1. Arabian; Mustang; Clydsdale; Does Shetland Pony count? Is Thoroughbred a breed? Man… that took me a while, and a lot of gray-matter scraping. Hope it works!

  2. Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

  3. By eating the eggs of the parasite?

Oooh, boy. That’s a bad topic for you, isn’t it?

  1. Nope. Athena doesn’t really have a mother - she grew, full-grown, out of Zeus’ forehead.

  2. Obviouisly you don’t read enough comic books. Mjolnir is the name of Thor’s hammer. (Given to him by Loki as a bribe the time Loki got caught shaving Thor’s wife bald. Norse gods are so interesting…)

  3. Nope. Beowulf’s three opponents are: Grendel, a large troll-like beast. Then Grendel’s mother tries to avenge her son. Finally late in his life Beowulf fought a dragon. AFAIK Beowulf’s mother doesn’t show up in the story at all.

And now, I’m waaaay in the hole: 6 points.
Hmm…

Rear Admiral Grace Hopper was the first woman to make flag rank in the US Navy. Name one of her other claims to fame. (3 points)

I’m going to be heading offline for a bit, I’ll get your answer then, and hopefully work on getting further out of the hole.

No, actually fleas are intermediate hosts for tapeworms; animals (at least cats and dogs) get tapeworms by eating infected fleas.

+2 for me!

  1. What company made Z cars before Nissan? (2 pts)

  2. What’s the capital of Peru? (2 pts)

  3. What is Kimchi? (2pts)

DAMMIT! I knew Grendel, and it crossed my mind for this. For some reason I was thinking that character belonged to Jaberwoky. That’ll learn me.

I should’ve guessed Thor’s hammer. And no, not much into comics.

About Zeus… did that leave a mark?

On to your next question:

First woman to walk on the moon!? No… first woman to make rank in the US military with a name that sounds uncannily like “grasshopper”? No… first woman to make such a rank in the military only to knock **OtakuLoki’s **score down by three points? Yes.

  1. BMW?

  2. GAH!

  3. a Korean dish?

  1. BMW?

Datsun

  1. GAH!

Lima

  1. a Korean dish?

Yes! Fermented cabbage, etc.

That brings me to…zero!

Doh! Datsun, shoulda known. :frowning:

Reminds me of THIS!

Sorry, but this sort of stuff is my forte.

Q#1 - 3 parts) This unique ecosystem, a national park, covers a significant portion of one U.S. state. It has been threatened for many years thanks to man tampering with the delicate balance of nature that keeps this ecosystem going. In 1947 this woman naturalist wrote a book calling it the River of Grass that brought a lot of public attention to its plight. This amazing woman fought for this ecosystem her entire life and lived to the ripe old age of 108. Her name is permanently linked with this ecosystem.

For 1 points, name the ecosystem:

For 1 point, name the state where it can be found:

For 3 points, name the naturalist.

*I did have to look up info for exact dates and ages.

Q#2) 3 points: What is the name of the hairless breed of cat?

Q#2) 2 points: Name a breed of dog that is predominantly hairless. (2 possible answers that I know of)

Name all of the great lakes! (1 point)
In golf, what is it called when you complete a hole 2 under par? (1 point)
What debilitating disease did Franklin Delano Roosevelt have? (1 point)
What language is spoken in Brazil? (1 point)
In baseball, describe how one fielder can get an unassisted triple-play. (3 points!)

Difficulty 3

Match the word with the language. In no particular order:

Kumi
Sqh
Kekahi
Dva
Doq

Czech
Cherokee
Swahili
Hawaiian
Klingon

No problem, this is kind of my own special way if fighting ignorance and have fun doing it. There’s a lot to fight, so please bear with me

Q#1) DAMN! I was hoping you’d go with something a little more well know like Yellowstone National Park, but the River of Grass thing threw me off, so I’m not sure. Assuming it is Yellowstone, I’ll just continue…

a) Yellowstone National Park
b) Wyoming
c) Jane Goodall

Q#2) Huh. I think it’s an asian breed. But that’s all I got, and it’s probably wrong anyway!

Q#3) I’m going to go with a Chiuaua?

  1. Michigan, Superior, Huron, Erie, Ontario

  2. Eagle?

  3. Polio?

  4. Portuguese!

  5. So, the guy with the hat, catches the white round thingy, and… damn… I lost it. Does it have anything to do with the shortstop?

Holy shit, Lib! You give me far too much credit!

Leeeets see…

Kumi = Swahili
Sqh = Cherokee
Kekahi = Hawaiian
Dva = Czech
Doq = Klingon*
*HA!

Oh, honey. I was going to point to my location as a clue but I thought the Everglades at least were well known. The Everglades in Florida and the wonderful Marjorie Stoneman Douglas was the naturalist.

The cat is the Sphinx and the dog breeds are the Mexican Hairless and the Chinese Crested. I thought everyone knew the Mexican Hairless. Each have some hair so are not completely hairless. The Sphinx has a bit of peach fuzz but is pretty much naked.

I’m going to have to quit while I’m way behind now because I need to try and get some stuff done today.

AHHH! The Everglades! Of course. Didn’t know jack shit about em anyway though, but I should’ve gotten you at least that one point. :frowning:

See, I had Siamese in my head, and couldn’t shake it. Wouldn’t have been able to guess Sphinx though, I knew it was a cat (obviously of Egyptian decent) but I thought it had hair. At least I was close with the country of origin on the dog

I hope you do come back and play more, I enjoy your questions. Work can wait
