Really. Why the hell did they go to the trouble? They even painted individual icons. Why would you bother? 
If she opens the box and looks inside and sees a vaguely iPad-looking shape with an Apple logo on it, and it’s 10pm and she doesn’t bother to pick it up and examine it… I could see it working.
Did you see the pictures at the link? Maybe the perpetrators thought it would fool somebody but I can’t see how it could.
It also gives them an out if she calls them on it being fake. “What are you talking about? Look, right here it has the…what the hell? Oh my god this is just a piece of wood! Thank you so much for pointing this out to us! Now we have to go get our money back.”
