Now that Mr. Yushchenko has been definitely diagnosed with dioxin poisoning, thoughts are turning to remedies. Apparently liposuction may be one of the most effective:

Dioxin settles in the body fat and lasts a long time. Eliminating it quickly from Yushchenko’s body would likely reduce his chances of long-term ill health. One possibility is a couple of liposuction treatments, a procedure that sucks the fat from the body.

Who knew that you could get buff from a poisoning remedy?

In related news, Mr. Yushchenko is saying that he was likely poisoned at a supper he had with the head of the Ukrainian successor of the KGB:

The reformist candidate, who faces Kremlin-backed Viktor Yanukovych in a repeat runoff on Dec. 26, first fell ill after having dinner with Ukrainian Security Service chief Ihor Smeshko and his deputy Volodymyr Satsyuk on Sept. 5. He reported having a headache about three hours after the dinner, and by the next day had developed an acute stomach ache.

I dunno, but if I were a reformist politician in a post-Soviet state, I’m not sure I would have accepted the dinner invitation…

This *is *the fisrt time that Ukrane has been independant of Russia in, oh, FOREVER. You gotta expect that some thing like this would happen. Eventually.

Dioxin

Studies were done on a 30 year old woman who had been exposed to a massive dosage (144,000 pg/g blood fat) of dioxin equal to 16,000 times the normal body level. The study concluded that she only suffered from chloroacne. The study also covered a second subject who had received a dosage equivalent to 2,900 times the normal level. They were provided with olestra to help dioxin secretion.

A notable individual case of dioxin poisoning, Ukrainian politician Viktor Yushchenko was exposed to a near-fatal dose of dioxins in 2004, according to the reports of the physicians responsible for diagnosing him. This is the first known case of a single high dose of pure TCDD dioxin poisoning. Experts say that it could take two to three years for the disfigurement of his face to clear up.

On the positive side, it has been shown that consumption of Olestra greatly increases the rate (more than 10x faster) that fat soluble trace poisons such as Dioxins and PCBs can be removed from the body
