Ok, thanks!
Yes, I have VSync on. If I leave it off, won’t I get unpleasant tearing? If my monitor is only capable of 60fps, is there any point in getting more fps than 60?
I didn’t. But, of course, if you do then you know the obvious solution ![]()
It’s fun but something about the speed or smoothness of movement gives me motion sickness really quickly.
I played the hell out of it with Mrs. Plant (v.2.0), but Mrs. Plant (v.3.0) gets ill, too.
I think I’d prefer playing Doom in 21:9 3440X1440 at 60fps* than in 1080 at 120fps even if its Quake-like multiplayer may reward fast refresh rates so my (imaginary) PC upgrade money will (imaginarily) go to that.
How worth it are the DLCs?
*Calling Kinthalis, what’s that like?
Christ, you needed a 386, DOS and a primitive network to kill your friends with DOOM I and DOOM II.
I have some really basic questions, if someone could help me out.
I was going to get the pc version when I saw it’s on sale for $20, but it’s not really the game apparently? Just a couple discs and then you have to download more content?
Am I reading that correctly? You have to be online to play at all times?
Also, I have to get a Steam account? I don’t have one. Does it cost money?
I’d like to buy it but not if it’s going to cost me $10/month to play. It wasn’t clear what buying the discs entailed, what it came with, etc., and googling for answers didn’t help.
I can only some of the questions with certainty:
Don’t know if you have to get a Steam account but it’s free and worth it. It’s convenient in terms of buying and patches. If you want to get Doom for 20$, Steam sales (or sales on Humble Bundle or Green Man Gaming which give you codes to get the game on Steam) are your best bet for buying it cheap.
It won’t cost you 10$/month to play it. I bought it a few a days ago on Steam and the initial purchase price was the only cost.
Great! Thanks. I haven’t shot any demons in a few years… maybe even a decade, decade in a half. My trigger finger is itchy.
If you want to shoot demons, you might also like the Brutal Doom mod of the old 90s Doom. The mod and related software are free although you may have to purchase the old games if you don’t have the disks anymore.

There’s no subscription fee for Doom or for Steam. Steam is completely free, and Doom only costs the upfront price for the game. There’s no ongoing costs.
You do not have to be online at all times to play the game. You do have to be online during installation. It’s very rare these days for the full game to ship on physical media. There’s a lot of complicated industry reasons for it, but it boils down to using the one or two month time it takes to get copies burned onto discs and boxes printed up to keep working on the game. What this means is, when you buy a physical copy of the game, you also have to install a patch to fix all the stuff that wasn’t working when they started manufacturing the physical discs, before you can start playing.
And if you play any computer games at all, Steam is highly recommended. The vast majority of games nowadays are sold through Steam (including almost all indie small-company games), and the few that aren’t, their companies have created their own Steam-like platform for them. So far, Steam has been remarkably non-evil in how they treat both their customers and their game developers (which is probably a large part of why they have such a large share of the market). They also have quite an extensive collection of old classics.
I think you misunderstood me. I wasn’t saying to upgrade, I just meant to turn off VSync, play with higher frame rates and if you experience any adverse effects like screen tearing, just turn VSync back on.
From what I hear, the DLC is all multiplayer oriented and not really worth it.
Seconded. There’s no downside to Steam, AFAICT, except that they’re always trying to sell you new games - but in an utterly ignorable way.
I perceived that as an option but didn’t think you meant that one. My display dates back to 2011 (got it to play Skyrim) and is rated at 60fps. While I know that it’s possible to overclock one’s monitor, I doubt a 200CAD 1080p 60fps monitor from 2011 can go much above 60 frames per second. If I’m mistaken about that, I’d be delighted to know how I can push it further.
I ordered it last night. I feel like I should make a playlist of my 90s music to go along with it to really get back into the feel of it when I used to play all the time.
We got a demo on our Windows 95 computer. Remember when bloatware was fun?
Some of the WADs of old DOOM had good background music.
When I was courting mt ex wife, she in NH and I in AR, we played DOOMII with two phone lines each so we could talk to each other in play. It was best to stand directly behind her, for she tended to hold down the trigger and then aim.
What, “Shawn’s Got the Shotgun” isn’t good enough for you?
I do keep the volume on when I play, but I used to throw on my own music to drown out the grunting noises. I did have to listen to the standard BGM and noises because how else would I know of the secret room if I didn’t hear the far-off sound of a door opening when I did xyz?
