Doom (2016) is so much fun!

Yep.

I rather like the “Momento Mori” WAD.

Well, OK I downloaded Doom for PS4 last night, and have never played any Doom games before. I have a lot of crap to figure out. I haven’t fully passed any shoot-em-ups yet, because I run out of ammo. I am not very good at switching back and forth between weapons, finding new ammo, and keeping my health for very long. I believe the entry level pistol I have has unlimited ammo, but is not very powerful. I have some things to figure out here.

Well, yes.
The first thing I tried to do in Doom and Doom II was kill a guy for the shotgun.

There was a shotgun in the room where the demon was throwing fireballs, come to think of it.

I think if u do a glory kill especially with a chainsaw they drop ammo

Absolutely, those Wolfy games were GREAT. Doom downloading now

Starting to get the hang of Doom here. This game is a freaking riot!

Biggest self-taught tip for myself was “Never stop moving”. Unlike a lot of shooters where you want to stay still (often behind cover) and try and pick people off, Doom is all about running/jumping constantly while shooting like a maniac.

I’m learning that too but I often find it difficult to make out enemies from the background when I’m moving. Once of the advantages of 90s graphics was that they tend to be more legible. In Doom 2016, highly detailed brown imps don’t have a clean silhouette against highly detailed brown ground.

Is Doom 2016 available in VR? Adding depth perception might make it easier to distinguish characters from background.

I don’t know if it is available to the general public but it has been available to some people in VR:

BTW I’ve played a VR version of Serious Sam but my fingers got really tired having to pull the trigger of the initial gun too many times.

There are at least two wait screen tips to this effect. I like “Hell devours the indolent.”

I saw one yesterday (I don’t recall the exact text) that said:
“If your enemy has a head, it’s a weak spot.”

My daughter bought this game for me as a Christmas present but my pseudo-gaming laptop couldn’t push more than 12fps at minimum settings. Having the excuse I needed to build a better gaming rig, I did and am having a laugh riot with this game! FWIW, I am now capable of 190fps at 1080p, on a 75htz monitor I don’t get much tearing that I can see. The optimization in this game is incredible.

I tend to be the stalk-in, take as many hidden shots from cover as I can, FPS player, DOOM is not that kind of game.

That is one of my favourite tips too

I am playing it slowly as I tend to get stuck in certain battles. No spoilers though but the moment after getting to hell for the second time has me in stitches… The dev team did really well with this game!

ETA: Tip for those starting out, weakening your enemy and going for the glory kill is, at least for me, the only way to gain enough ammo and health to make it through some of the battles.

Yes, I depend a lot on sniping and range work when I play FPS and FPS/RPG crossovers. Saves wear and tear on the armor.

But DOOM is more… RRRRRRAARRRRRRRRRGGGHHHHHH!

RARGH helps here, too.

Indeed, and in some cases giggling like a little kid while ***RRRRRRAARRRRRRRRRGGGHHHHHH!***ing around the room at full speed, changing weapons depending on the demon bearing down on me

Prior to playing Doom I have played, most recent first: Skyrim deluxe whatever edition, Fallout 4, and GTAV.
Unlike those games (excepting GTAV to some degree) I am finding something I should have expected, but didn’t about Doom. Have more than a few beers, and you SUCK at this game. Even if it’s on a Saturday, and there’s no work, and the sun is out, and it’s still early.
I’m stuck in what I believe is the last fight of the Foundry section, and dammit, I think I’m gonna have to wait till tomorrow morning to try beating this one!

This game is a RIOT! I just started playing it, I’m out on the surface of Mars now, I have the upgraded pistol and shotgun and the chainsaw, though I’ve not used that yet.

The glowing green grenade boxes…how the hell do you open those? I’ve shot them, thrown frag grenades at them, hit them with “F”…am I just not allowed to access them yet? I keep seeing them and I want to know what’s inside!

I believe you used the space bar in Doom I &II to use things.

Seconding the question.

I don’t have the game accessible to check but my bunch is that it’s a grenade (or ammo, armor) box that you’re trying to interact with when you have full grenades (or armor or ammo). I don’t remember any supply boxes being any sort of trick or puzzle.

Holy crap, I had to turn the difficulty level down from “hurt me plenty” to “I’m too young to die” to get past the final few Hell Knights in the foundry. Jaysus. I set it back right after the mission. I was out of chainsaw fuel, which I think would have helped me, and I sure couldn’t find more.
As to those grenade boxes, it seems like if I have one or two grenades in my inventory, the boxes don’t do anything. If I’m out, I think they make with one or two, but I’m not certain.
