Doom (2016) is so much fun!

The thing is, once you get the frag grenade I don’t think they “run out”. There’s just a timer on them before you can use another one.

Wait, the chainsaw uses ammunition, but the grenades don’t? My world is turned upside down.

I know the chainsaw uses gas (and seems to run out rather quickly), but AFAICT, unless I’m picking up grenades during battles I’m not aware of, it doesn’t seem they run out. Maybe they do, I just never have, partly because I don’t use too many of them because it takes awhile to get another one after you use one (watch the grenade meter slowly fill after tossing one) and by then I’m already locked in battle, running around and I usually forget to use them again.

I use grenades usually to start a battle. I try to pick off as many weak demons with my upcharged pistol with headshots at a distance without being noticed and then toss a grenade into the first big bunch of foes I encounter when I charge in to the battle.

I’m gonna buy a 64 bit PC.

Waiting for delivery. Expected by Friday. I keep running to check the mail. I want to blow shit up.

I would be happy if I could run DOS, Doom I & II with the M16 patch.

The chainsaw uses exactly one “unit” of fuel every time it’s used, regardless of what you use it against. Kill a lowly zombie - one unit. Kill a cacodaemon - one unit. But it kills pretty much everything with one hit.

The grenades are on a timer, but IIRC, you can pick up grenade “ammo” to instantly reset the cooldown.

No…

BTW I just save up the chainsaw for the Baron of Hells… though next time I play I’ll try it on other enemies to check out the death animations…

I used the chainsaw mostly against Pinky, because they were annoying as all hell. I had no problem with the Barons.

I’ve just encountered my first… I don’t know what they’re called. Demons with jetpacks. This game even makes getting killed a barrel of laughs. I was down on the ground looking up at this guy, and he first ripped off one of my arms, then ripped off the other arm, then hit me in the face with the arm, then tossed the arm aside and straight out punched me in my dying face!

The death animations slay me… pun completely intended!

Ok, it came. It took FOREVER to install and update. My computer (which is new) HATES it. The more I played, the better it behaved, but it froze a lot and the first time I tried to play arcade it wouldn’t load right.

Which, by the way, took forever because it doesn’t make it clear when it finally loads what you’re supposed to click on just to play old school style. I needed a walk through just to point me in the right direction.

When I finally got to play, it was ok. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t like it as much as I hoped. My pc version is different from the game system versions so trying to look up help can be kind of useless.

I’m sure some of my frustration will be worked out by playing, but it’s not intuitive at all and I wanted a clippy or something to be like “Are you trying to strafe? Why don’t you try a or d?” or “double space for a long jump.”

I did get good real fast at head shots, so there’s that.

Today it wouldn’t load. For hours and hours. Tweaking finally got it to load. But while I’m fairly tech-handy, I’m not really great at it so I don’t even know where to start to figure out what is going on. Is it my ram? I have 12 gb. Is it my graphics card, my steam settings, the game settings arghhhhhhh. When I google my questions it’s WAY over my head.

So I need some help. How do I adjust game settings? I would rather lose a little bit of graphics for a lot of speed and ease. Is there a page I’m missing when I load the game?

Is there a good recommendation for a faq site or dumbed down guide? I’m finding I’m pausing (which took FOREVER to figure out, esc on pc) a lot and googling anew each time. And not like “where are the hidden rooms for 100% completion?” questions but more mundane. Like I completely accidentally figured out how to use the map today. (Tab on pc).

When I play it takes up the whole screen but I can’t get OUT without quitting it entirely or ctrl alt delete. That at least brings my taskbar back for me to click on whatever (which then won’t open because the game is hogging all my resources, but that’s a different problem.) I don’t always want to quit out, but just check my email real quick or similar.

Is there a way to save mid-game? That also would help. I wanted to play today but I knew I couldn’t finish and it doesn’t seem to let me save until the end of the level… which I could not reach. 3 attempts and I fell off into a Martian gorge… partially an accident trying to hop up to get armor or a doodad or something, partially to see what would happen because I couldn’t figure out where else to do (there was a slightly hidden door), got hit by a tram/train thing looking to see if the tracks went anywhere, and finally plummeting off of a big tower into another Martian gorge when I misjudged my jump… or lag fucked with me.

But the third time I died on the same mission, I was super tired. I had played it for like 90 minutes and had only 4/5 relic shards or whatever they’re called. I needed a break but there didn’t seem to be a way to do that. Or like right now, I could totally play for like an hour, but I don’t have it in me to play for 4 to finish the level. Please someone tell me there’s a way I’m missing to save and quit so I can return later.

I figured it mostly out. I was playing Arcade, which my computer HATES and had me so confused and overwhelmed. But I clicked “new slot” campaign and it started with being chained on the table and it was like a tutorial and I’m doing much better. Somehow I clicked on settings by accident and toned down some of the graphics and it runs smoother and now in a window, not full screen.

It’s still buggy, but much better. I found what was was looking for but I stand by my “it’s not intuitive” assessment.

I got killed so hard so many times today. But in the fun way I wanted, not in the “GODDAMN IT WHAT BUTTON DO I PRESS!?” way.

Game saving is done automatically by reaching checkpoints. At first I thought that sucked, because I wanted to be able to save at any time. I have come to prefer the way it is, because there is risk involved. Each time I die, I made a misake which I must be careful not to make next time. The checkpoints aren’t scatterred too widely, either.

Glad it’s running better for you and that you’ve found your way into the game proper.

What’s your setup? You’re the first person I’ve seen to speak negatively about its performance (at least post-launch when they patched). Not that I doubt you’re having issues, just wondering what system you’re running with in case I have any bright ideas.

Spending most of the last four days googling, I am farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr from the only person with pc issues. Today I got in MOSTLY ok at first and then when I was fighting Hell Knights (two!) my PISTOL wouldn’t fire, much less the good stuff. Punching them only prolonged the inevitable. It took two hours to get back on tonight. Then I kept falling off a cliff and now I can’t get back on.

I deleted some game file and then had Steam search for corruption and repair the folder. That didn’t work. I updated Windows 10. That didn’t work. I turn off just about all my background tasks and running programs. That doesn’t work. It might be a Windows Defender or antivirus conflict, but I disabled them both to play.

I have Windows 10 64 bit, 12 gb RAM, AMD Radeon R7, DDR4. My drivers are up to date (checked them anyway). It’s not a gaming machine, but it’s not a 5-year old netbook either. I bought it in December, so it shouldn’t be falling apart yet.

I’ve lowered a bunch of the settings to make it not as resource-hogging, but that doesn’t seem to do much.

Other than the pistol thing and one other time it didn’t save at a checkpoint (which yay, it does save in campaign mode, just not in arcade mode), it plays GREAT when I get it up and running. Clearly my system is capable of running it fine. It’s MOSTLY a launch issue of some kind.

I’m not finding a lot of “here’s what you need to do” solutions. I’m like at expert beginner level of computer stuff, so I can’t always articulate my problems or understand others’.

My next step tomorrow is to uninstall/reinstall.

I really like it when I can play. Just shouldn’t be this hard. It’s harder to open the game than to slay a demon. Slightly less hard than to collect some of the collectibles. I hate it when I can see them but not how to get to them.

I reset my Radeon settings back to factory default (not something I would normally tweak, other than not running a tray icon at all times, so I don’t know what was “wrong” with them) and that seemed to fix 75% of my problems. I have had far fewer freezes after the game has loaded, I’ve had zero stuck at 82% freezes. I did have trouble loading my mission, as all the graphics disappeared and I was floating in a cloudy space with a barrel or two, but I did get that up fine.

So clearly it’s a conflict on my system … somewhere. Something beyond just Radeon. I can’t imagine disabling my tray icon makes a game unplayable.

Today I got the flying jet pack demons and the one that shoots fire and disappears in a burst of red. I loved making that one disintegrate with the fist power up. That might be my favorite one. I also grenaded myself, so… yeah, I’m not posting youtube videos because I really suck. I don’t care cause I’m having fun.
