I haven’t had to deal with salesmen as much as people coming to “save” me. And Bernie will bark at the doorbell or a knock. I also have to restrain her - from slobbering all over whoever shows up. Of course, they can’t possibly know that - for some reason, black dogs look especially mean.
That’s just as dated. Most communities won’t let kids do fundraisers dtd any more. Maybe that’s just New Jersey. There was a high profile case several years ago when a child was raped and murdered.
In my experience there are very few legit dtd salemen anymore. Most are scam artists or worse. Those few semi-legit businesses (magazine subscriptions etc) use mostly people with very shakey backgrounds at best.
I have to repeat. Find out what your local ordinance is. If it is illegal to solicit door to door without a license then call the police. I can’t tell you how many scams start this way. It might not effect you because you are not gullible. They are waiting to find that house that only has the 80 year old lady alone at home. If the salesman is legit he has taken the time to find out about the local laws and gets the proper IDs.
For those of you who seem to think it’s ok for a D to D salesman to keep banging on my door all day: it’s not like he’s an invited guest. Yeah, shame on me for thinking I should be able to enjoy the privacy of my own home without some idiot continually harrassing me.
And it was pretty obvious that I was home… this guy was just a persistent a-hole. This guy got the much less-than-warm welcome he deserved.
For the record, in such a situation I answer the door with something big and black too…and it aint’ a labrador retriever.
As other posters have said, it’s not exactly safe to open your door to people you don’t know anyway. (Not digress too much, but two weeks ago we had a guy going through my neighborhood posing as a cop, knocking on doors and asking women if they lived alone, etc. He’s definitely not a cop, and hasn’t been caught).
You’re allowed to kill people in Colorado just for ringing your doorbell?
Same here. Knocking on doors is actually a common burglary tactic in West Palm Beach (the burglars force their way inside when you answer). I learned this from a police officer last year after a near break-in at my apartment.
Cherry2000, can you put a “no soliciting” sign on or near your door? It might keep some of the salespeople away. (It should keep all of them away, but I know from experience that it doesn’t).
I was joking about that (if it wasn’t apparent in the OP), but actually, you can for not much more than that.
Can’t find a link to the actual law at the moment, but the gist of it is that Coloradoans have a right to expect absolute saftey while in their homes. If someone is on your doorstep and either commits a crime, or you suspect that they might be there to commit a crime, you can indeed shoot them.
There’s a case here right now where two neighbors were fighting over a barking dog. One guy went over to the other guy’s house with a 2x4 and broke a window. The homeowner shot him dead, and the homeowner cannot be prosecuted.
If someone is on your doorstep and threatens you, or attempts to enter without permission, you can smoke 'em.
I get them once a month or so.
About half of them, after I tell them I’m not interested, ask me for a soda or some water (?).
