We had a thread about two years ago, predicting how much longer the SDMB would survive. I think I thought it would be gone by around late 2021. Glad I was wrong.
I’m 40. Joined in 2003. Other than Yahoo Mail and NFL. com for fantasy football, this might be the only website I still actively visit from that era (as opposed to occasionally getting their via a link like, say, cnn.com). So there’s that.
? Am I the only one who still sees that fighting-ignorance-since-1973 subtitle in a red banner right underneath the blue banner at the top that reads “THE STRAIGHT DOPE MESSAGE BOARD The Straight Dope”?
I don’t think it’s ever not been there.
It’s there for me in New Topics, and in Unread Topics, and in Latest, and in Categories, and in individual category pages.
It isn’t there at the top of this thread; or, I think, at the top of individual threads in general.
It might be the board theme you’re using. I don’t see it when I go to boards.straightdope.com.
I don’t see the “Fighting Ignorance” line on any of those. Weird.
Maybe it’s the interface. I’m in Straight Dope Light, Mac desktop, Firefox.
I’m on Win10, and using the Discourse Classic interface. On both Firefox and Chrome, I don’t see the Fighting Ignorance banner when I’m logged in; when I’m logged out, and seeing what I assume is the default interface, I see the banner.
Same here, so I would guess that it is theme specific. I never log out so I haven’t seen the fighting ignorance line in a very long time.
Only the SD Dark and SD Light themes show the Fighting Ignorance banner.
I only see it when at the very top of a webpage.

You’re right, that’s the difference: not whether it’s an individual thread. I see it at the top of individual threads also, if I’m all the way at the top of the page.
I’d thought about us moving to Reddit before, too, as a way of salvaging the Board if the money ran out. But the way Reddit is structured is just so different. Threaded conversations just work differently than general discussions, splitting off into multiple separate conversations. And most of actual content has some counterpart on Reddit already.
All I would see surviving is something kinda like a community chat room (ala the Facebook Group) and maybe CCC/SR.
There’s always usenet!
ETA: Actually looks like there are (or were, not sure how that works) Straight Dope groups on usenet.
Here’s the (active) alt.fan.cecil-adams
newsgroup on Google’s Usenet interface:

misc.facts.straight-dope
seems to have been overrun by spam.

Hey, I’m not that heavy…
That’s how more that a few of us made it here to The Dope.I was on alt.fan.cecil-adams as far back as ‘94 or ‘95 and for many years after making my way over here, there were still names I recognized from Usenet.
The Usenet was so much fun. I was never in the Cecil group though
Man, those were the good old days. I probably spent as many hours reading and posting to rec.motorcycles as I have to every site on the web in total in the years since.
Hehhh
I just came back after a decade
