Doper opinions on time spent in the workplace.

Me, I’d start sending resumes around and jump sail the moment I found a better fit. Otherwise, this busybody is going to rule your life–she’s already found a way to overtake your own child in your list of priorities, and you’ve only worked there for 45 days–and in five years you’ll be one of the ones ranting about how she and her pushover boss make you want to jump off a bridge.

Of course, I’ve never been a salaried employee, but between costume retail over Halloween a couple of years ago and the national campaign this summer, I have done some full-time (and then some!) work. IME, if you’re working like a dog and you don’t feel it’s being properly appreciated, you have got to rectify the situation immediately or else it’s just going to get worse.

And when you’re logging 50+ hours a week, little kerfuffles with other employees become a big problem and you need management to solve it quickly and sternly. In fact, one of the really impressive things about working with the DNC this summer was that, when interpersonal problems came up, they didn’t just grease the squeaky wheel, they pulled aside each person involved, separately, and made the boundaries absolutely clear in a mutually agreeable solution. It was no coincidence that it was the most amicable working environment I’ve ever been in, despite being the most stressful/demanding.

IME, working for a management team that’s too lily-livered to step up to the plate and solve problems is more trouble than it’s worth. If this washes over, it will soon be something else. Slaving one’s life away for the corporate machine is bad enough without having to be one’s own personal advocate for every little inch of understanding.
