I have an aversion to most music that contains lyrics that are in English. I don’t actively dislike any of it, I’m just not attracted to it in any way. Pretty much anything else is fine, but I mostly listen to classical stuff and film soundtracks (not of the ‘compilations of songs loosely associated with a film’ variety, however).
20 year old female here.

22/female
I don’t listen to a lot of mainstream music these days. I like a lot of music from the Eighties (Duran Duran, Erasure, Tears for Fears, the Police, etc.) My musical tastes range from Johnny Cash to Enya to Tori Amos to Rammstein, so my favorite kind of music is rather hard to pin down, but if pressed to name my all-time favorite musical artist, I would have to say Tori Amos.
The music I listen to is pretty random. Quite a bit of techno, classical, 80s, soundtracks (from back when movies actually had soundtracks, think Danny Elfman), and the random song that has the right mix of sounds to catch my fancy (which is, BTW, the source of the car commercial music, usually). Leftover stuff from old roommates I don’t delete for some reason.
23, 24 in a couple months.
Hee!
I’m not gonna get into a big debate over “real punk” here, but you can ask pretty much anyone, that is not punk. So thanks for the laugh.
Anyways, I’m 17.
I like punk, that’s pretty much it.
Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Dead Kennedys, Misfits, NOFX, Rancid, AFI, Dropkick Murphys, Vandals, Bouncing Souls, Flogging Molly, Social Distortion,… I could go on for hours, but I’ll stop here, you get the idea, blah blah blah.
I have a couple problems with mainstream music, ala Britney and 50 Cents and Justin Timberlands or whatever. Its the musical equivelent to a piece of gum. There’s no real value to it. You chew a piece of gum and yeah, its nice while you’re chewing it, but then you spit it out and your condition hasnt changed at all because you had that gum. If you were hungry before, you’re still hungry. Pop is the same. You can listen to the song and that could be fun for you, but then when it’s over, you haven’t gained anything from it. It hasn’t made you FEEL anything. It hasn’t inspired you to go out and DO something. It hasn’t done anything.
I have major, major probelms with MTV, but I think I’ll end it here.
23, male. As background, one should note that I don’t pay much attention to lyrics. I tend to treat the vocals as another melodic counterpoint.
I listen to
Classical: Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Stravinsky, Debussy…
Trance: anything and everything that is good for trippin’ flights ;). To this, I should add Delerium and Sa Trincha as well.
Some other stuff like Coldplay, RHCP, Simon & Garfunkel, U2, Pink Floyd…
Then, a lot of old Hindi film classics (mostly late 50s - mid 70s).
Actually, I don’t tend to idolise bands. I’ve tons of bands represented by only 1 song (or very few songs).
My overall playlists change character every 2 months.
I’m 18 years old. I listen to pop and rock, mostly. I haven’t watched MTV since the first season of The Osbournes, although I do like MTV2 (mainly Subterranean, which was better when it was called 120 Minutes). VH1 has addictive programming–I love I Love the '80s and the (crappy, but fun) lists.
Off the top of my head:
Belle and Sebastian
The White Stripes
Wire
Spoon
Sonic Youth
Pixies
The Shins
Talking Heads
The Television Personalities
The Vaselines
The Raincoats
The Buzzcocks
Robert Johnson
Throwing Muses
The Velvet Underground
Neutral Milk Hotel
The Soft Boys
The Jesus and Mary Chain
Sebadoh
Luna
X-Ray Spex
and, MattTheCroc help me,
Violent Femmes.
Looking at Hüsker Düde’s list, we seem to have very similar tastes. How could I forget Beat Happening or Mission of Burma!
Can’t stand MTV, but I’ll admit to listening to pop/rock radio, though I rarely buy any of it.
I listen to lots of 60s and classic rock like:
The Beatles, Zombies, Animals, Ventures, Booker T. & the MGs, the Byrds, etc.
I have almost every Tom Petty album ever recorded, a few cds of newer stuff that includes Spoon, the White Stripes, Weezer, Old 97s, and the Offspring.
I’m also getting into country a bit, mostly local Texas hill-country artists, not that CMT crap.
I like The Clash, Elvis Costello, The Ramones, The Dead Kennedys, NOFX, Rancid, AFI, Hüsker Dü, The Descendants and others (and also most of Lisa-go-Blind’s list), and I consider everything in roadkiller’s list to be punk (with the exception of All American Rejects, who are blatantly pop-emo). Just because it’s punk doesn’t mean its not bad. The bands listed there may be - in some people’s opinion - shite, but it doesn’t mean they’re not punk, even if they are pop-punk. And, given the context, I’d like to thank Blink 182 for exposing me to The Clash and others.
And also, you should remember that, much as I don’t like them, Good Charlotte weren’t formed to sell fashion.
Arrrrrgh!
You weren’t doing yourself any favours with “The White Stripes”, either, but I’ll let you off the hook for actually reading my post
Thanks. Was it you or someone else who got to go to an Assemblage/VNV concert? I remember some Doper did, and that it was not fair!
VNV DJ-ed at a local club here recently. It was nice to find out they lke the same stuff I do. The playlist was awesome.

You misattributed silly_duck’s comment to me plus you got my nick wrong as well…
24 year old midwestern female
Last 3 albums I bought (with gift certificates only):
Belle & Sebastian
Missy Eliot
Outkast
Random albums I’ve recently copied to my HDD from my CD collection:
Mighty Mighty Bosstones (live at the middle east)
Chicago (CTA)
The Scofflaws
Metallica (St. Anger)
Ben Folds (two recent EPs)
Sublime
Soul Coughing
Skankin’ Pickle
Trainspotting Soundtrack
Pop-y rock band from Chapel Hill, The b-sides
Gospel/blues artist from Chapel Hill, Judy Woodall’s Muletrain
Punk/rock band from Cleveland, Bellevue
Also a huge fan of the “alternative” music from the early 90s. I stopped listening to “rock” radio stations when bands like Creed, 3doors Down and the like came out. I did a stint listening to NPR then recently switched to exclusively listening to the local hip-hop (ClearChannel) station because at least it was all stuff I hadn’t heard before.
I don’t watch videos on TV. And none of my friends share my music tastes.
I listen to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, I got Fever to Tell and am looking forward to getting the two EP’s that were released before the first Album.
Heres what else I listen too,
The Police
Coldplay
The Coral
The Strokes
Paul Simon
The Darkness
The Vines
The Hives
The Manic Street Preachers
Feeder
The Who
Supergrass
Prodigy
Tupac
Artful Doger
Travis
The Streets
Cooper Temple Clause
Jet
No Doubt
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Queens of the Stoneage
Peter Frampton
Oasis
Duran Duran
Dj Shadow
Daft Punk
Basement Jaxx
The Beatles
Spandau Ballet
The Clash
The Jam
Stereophonics
The Stone Roses
Tin Planet
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs Rock my world at the moment, plus I’m in love with Karen O, so that helps
I have some very diverse music interests. Generally, i oppose mainstream/radio stuff.
I like Classic Rock- The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Bob Dylan and Frank Zappa are my top 5 (That covers a lot- jazz/rock fusion, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, folk rock, and the Beatles cover too much ground to list…). I like jam bands- Phish, the Grateful Dead, Medeski, Martin & Wood. I like Radiohead. I love jazz music- especially bop. Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane and Charles Mingus are some of my favorite jazz musicians. I like classical music, especially Baroque. For the most part I’m not a big fan of orchestral pieces or sizeable bands- I love stuff written for piano alone and even chamber groups are nice.
FTR I’m 16.

Well, to be fair, I only have/like the first Violent Femmes album, although it’s one of my top 10 albums.
Why the hate for the White Stripes? Is it because (gasp) they’ve achieved some level of fame?
I’m 19, but I’m really, really picky when it comes to music. Not snobbish, like the guy complaining about popsicles, but I can only listen to certain bands for any length of time. Like the following:
Rammstein
Kidney Thieves
Deftones
Unfinished Thought (shameless plug for this fledgling band; if you like a dark industrial/rock sound with incredible female vocals, go to www.unfinishedthought.com)
Wumpscut
Skinny Puppy
KMFDM
VNV Nation
I really like heavy music with gothic and/or operatical overtones (IE Rammstein, Kidney Thieves, UT), or the darker industrial style. The last two on my list don’t really fit that, but they’re great in their own right, so they get listed, dammit.
BUT, the main turn on/off for me is vocals/lyrics. A lot of bands out there have music I really dig (like Disturbed), but I can’t listen to them because the vocalist sounds like crap or the songs are lame ass rants about authority or drugs or whatever. Stupid lyrics or an annoying voice puts any band in the slush pile for me.
Oh, and I’d consider plain rock as an “oldie” genre.

BTW, if you want some industrial/EBM lovin’, try digitalgunfire.com . It’s a nice little 24/7 Shoutcast station that you’ll probably love. FV, A23, FLA and BE all get regular playtime, and you’ll probably find some new favourites.

My taste is what I like to call “who the hell is that?” Basically for a while there I was essentially only listening to bands from Australia or NZ that no one in this country had ever heard of

**Which ones? **
Crowded House(known as that hey now song band), Split Enz, all Finn incarnations as you can tell, Schnell Fenster, Paul Kelly, Mutton Birds, Dave Dobbyn, The Front Lawn, and I’m sure I’m leaving stuff out.
