Dopers--Let's Create an Alternate "100 Greatest Songs of the Past 25 Years" list

Uh oh, looks like we’ve got a tie for 87.

  1. Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence

86 (or 85). The Replacements, “Hold My Life”

83 (I think). Love and Rockets – No New Tale to Tell

85 Joy Division “Love Will Tear Us Apart.”

No way! 85 is far too low. And then, in a shameless piece of hypocrisy
84 Tom Waits, “Rain Dogs”

  1. Sleater-Kinney: “I Want to Be Your Joey Ramone”

(I always thought Your Joey Ramone would be a great username.)

  1. The Dandy Warhols “Not if you were the last junkie on earth.”

This 24 yeard old song just squeaks into the 25 year time limit:

“Driver’s Seat” - Sniff ‘n’ the Tears from 1979

A good, solid rock song that at a time when disco was starting its death throes, pretty much delivered a coup de grace !!!

vl_mungo,
As I stated in my OP, this list isn’t in order of preference. It’s just a collection of the hundred best.

Hüsker Düde, I strike “Marquee Moon”, as it dates from 1977. This list is for 1978-2003.

The list so far, to organize:

99) The Church - Under the Milky Way Tonight
98) CMX - Ainomieli
97) The Nails - 88 Lines About 44 Women
96) Pixies - Wave of Mutilation
95) New Pornographers - Letter from an Occupant
94) Joe Jackson - Beat Crazy
93) Hüsker Dü - Pink Turns To Blue
92) The Lemonheads - It’s a Shame About Ray
91) The White Stripes - Fell in Love With a Girl
90) REM - Country Feedback

79) The Dandy Warhols - Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth
78) Sniff ‘n’ the Tears - Driver’s Seat

and I add
77) The Television Personalities - Part Time Punks

I guess I just gotta read those OP’s a bit more closely… me idiot. BTW great list on your site Lisa-go-Blind

  1. My Heart and the Real World - The Minutemen

What? No Ramones?
76) The Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop

#74 The Pernice Brothers – “Working Girls (Sunlight Shines).”

OK, I could have picked from a lot of PB songs, but it’s the one that drew me to the band in the first place.

I haven’t seen anything by The Smiths yet (hint, hint…)

  1. Roxy Music - “Avalon”
  1. Nick Lowe - Cruel To Be Kind

witchwendy, “Blitzkrieg Bop” is from 1976, two years too early.

Update:

  1. The Television Personalities - Part Time Punks
  2. The Minutemen - My Heart and the Real World
  3. The Pernice Brothers - Working Girls (Sunlight Shines)
  4. Roxy Music - Avalon
  5. Nick Lowe - Cruel to Be Kind
  1. Cat Power – Nude as the News
  1. They Might Be Giants: “She’s an Angel”

(Yes, I’m bypassing the more widely known “Ana Ng” and “Birdhouse in Your Soul.”)

  1. Elvis Costello, “Oliver’s Army”

Since two members of my musical Holy Trinity, The Replacements and Husker Du, appear to be well-represented, I had better make sure that the third member, Superchunk, also makes it there. So …

  1. “Slack Motherfucker” – Superchunk.

And as far as choosing “Wave of Mutilation,” are we thinking the version on “Doolittle” or the UK Surf version, which is amazing in its own right?
