Dopers, Name that car part, Cause mines broke.

When you put gas in your car, you put the nozzle in the hole in the side of the car and squeeze the handle and gas pours through the hole into a tube that carries it into the tank…Does that tube have a name?

Filler neck or filler neck hose?

what oz0ne said. filler neck.

Thanks Guys, Mine straight up broke in half. Was filling the tank last night and I hear running water…or gas just pouring onto the ground.

Did you flick your ‘Bic™’ to see what it was you were hearing?

Sadly all I had was my phone, lighting the puddle of gas under the truck would have been much brighter.

Just like that? What in the world would have caused that to happen?

Yep - fuel filler neck.

Mine went (cracked or something; didn’t separate completely) a few years ago. Toyota Camry. Noticed it leaking while refueling just like you did.

Cost about $120 USD to fix at the time, but the car was an older model.

Repair man said sometimes they just go, especially on older cars - metal/vibration fatigue or some such. Plausible, I suppose, given how often most people refuel.

Not too bad cost-wise as far as car repairs go, IMHO.

there are several makes/models of cars which are prone to the filler neck rusting through. it’s usually just plain galvanized or aluminized steel.

By the way you ask the question I don’t suppose you’re going to fix it yourself?

This would be a classic neighborhood mechanic repair using junkyard parts, probably not too difficult. I would NOT take it to a dealer - this is not a typical wear part they would have in stock and they have $$$ labor rates.

If you see fuel splashing it IS a fire hazard, certainly if setting still. If you can keep moving on the way to the shop you can outrun the drips and fuel vapors.
