Dopers of RI Untie - er, Unite! Yeah!

In the past few days, it’s occurred to me that there are a good deal of Dopers from RI (considering the state population isn’t over a million even when the X-Games are in town).

And yes, we’re past the “check-in for X kind of doper” phase here at the SDMB, but damnit, I wanna know how close I was to y’all a few years back.

I went to boarding school in RI from 1995 to 1999 on Aquidneck Island. More specifically, I went to Portsmouth Abbey School in Portsmouth, RI. Rival school was St. George’s (founded by the same guy, which follows) . . . anyway.

I know there are at least three of you who used to be or are currently in RI. Show yerselves!

Ooo, you were an “islander”… probably one of those rich kids we all loved to hate!

I was born and raised in Cumberland, RI, the upper-right hand corner of the state. I moved around a lot in college (1994-1999) but I settled back near home last year, and now live in Woonsocket, RI. Woonsocket’s also in northern RI.

And no, I don’t have that horrid Rhode Island accent. But I do say “wicked”, as in “wicked cool!” and am not ashamed of it!

I just recently escaped from, er, I mean, moved out of RI.

Born in Providence, moved to North Providence (North Providence High School - yikes!), then went to Brown. Lived in Providence for the past five years (after graduating).

I just moved to Brooklyn, but I’m sure at some point I’ll move back, because real RIers can’t ever really escape…

And since this a RI thread and RIers all do this (we can’t help ourselves): my former boss now works at Portsmouth Abbey, and the guy who does the graphic design for the newsletter I edit went to school there. (You’re too young to know them, though, iampunha.

Technically, I don’t live in RI, but I’m only about 20 miles away from the state line (Fall River, MA).
Can I play too?

Blue Twylight I used to live in Fall River too! Lived near N. Main St. for a bit, then near St. Anne’s Hospital. You don’t happen to know the band Bob’s Day Off do you?

As is painfully obvious to anyone who owns a Providence phone directory, I live in Rhode Island; West Warwick, to be exact. Yes, the town that is slowly burning down, building by abandoned building. Didn’t live here all my life, though, I was actually born in Yokahama, Japan (Navy brat.) Lived most of my wasted adolescence in North Kingstown; moved out and lived in Slocum for a bit right across from a ski slope where I never learned how to ski. Moved around for a bit; North Carolina, New York, Florida, Cape Cod, Brockton, Mass until I finally settled down for whatever reason I used to have in West Warwick.

Home of the Gods. And the best New York System restaurant in the entire world.

I had good friends (well, good acquaintances . . . ) in high school from Fwall Riva.

Rasa, I swear I must have been near Woonsocket at some point. Do you know of any private schools near there? Some sports team probably played 'em at some point.

And no, I’m not one of those rich kids y’all love to hate. Far from it, in fact.

iampunha: Hmm, Mt. St. Charles is in Woonsocket; private Catholic school with a killa hockey team. They have an ice rink, been there? That’s kind of near me, but not really. (Other side o’ town.) VERY French-Canadian area.

**Euty:**I used to live in East Greenwich, loved that area, kinda the “Poor Man’s Newport”. I almost rented a house in West Warwick but didn’t.

Good to see we’re well represented!

Ok, Euty, you got me. What does this mean?

And since you bring up hotdogs, what about Spike’s on Thayer Street. So good, especially the tomato and cheddar.

And speaking of food, have you ever eaten at Mike’s Kitchen? It’s in a VFW Hall (the Tabor-Franchi Post) in Cranston, I think. Great calamari.

Do the rest of you have any favorite RI restaurants? (I could go on all day…).
