Thank you for the answers. My message board knowledge is far less eclectic now. What I’d really like to read, though, is a print media essay or article on message boards - this one if possible. Are there any to be found?

Although it has been explained to me (by Ultress et al) that choice of forum is all just a matter of taste I feel I have redeemed my thread a little by my experimental attitude. I have tried to coerce a great debater or general questioner into making just one appearance here and failed. Delicate stomachs, I suppose.
