Just this morning I noticed my son had three sets of seemingly bug bites on him. But there were two next to each other in each case?
What does this mean?
Spider I think
Where do you live?
Ohio
an apartment
Perhaps you could describe these bites in a little more detail? Mosquito bites, for instance, tend to produce a small, round, raised reddish bump, whereas the welts produced by most Ohio spiders (at least, all the ones that ever bit me) are broader, flat, whitish, and slightly more irregular in shape. Also, how far separated are the bites in each pair? Do they itch? What’s your son’s lifestyle like-- Does he regularly tromp through the woods and thick underbrush in shorts and a tee-shirt, or does he stay inside and play Nintendo? Where on his body are they-- Arms, legs, torso? Is there a lot of water in your area (rivers, ponds, lakes, etc.)?
And don’t forget that it could be an indoor spider, rather than one found in the woods (if, indeed, it is a spider at all). Does your son sleep near an open window or a vent?
Actually, it could be just regular insect bites and the pairing could be entirely coincidental.
Cat or dog fleas, although they cannot complete their breeding cycle on humans, will still bite, if they happen to encounter a tight bit of clothing, such as a sock or the waistband of a pair of shorts, will make a line of bites around the area; it’s not beyond possibility that these would happen to be 3 neatly paired bites, purely by chance.
Well, I found like 6 more on his butt and a few on his stomach.
i still don’t know what theyw ere, but that night, he had pulled out his sleeping bag from the other room and and sat on it. SO thre must’ve been something in there.
He’s pretty much better now thanks to Calamine Lotion.
Doesn’t sound like one insect but a few… unfortunately, it sounds like fleas (or misquitos -but it seems early for misquitos)…it could be a result of the last tenant in the apartment. That can be solved by bug bombing - not only will it take care of fleas, but get rid of spiders and other creepy crawlies (except roaches, go figure).
Or is it possible it could be a plant source like poisen ivy? The oil can be a real pain in the butt and lasts a while. It would take a day or so to show up as welts - did you guys go somewhere recently that he might have walked through it?
Wolf spiders are the only spiders up there that I can think of other than brown recluses that will most likely bite… they’re both outdoor spiders and kind of odd for an apartment, but they’d leave two small puncture marks and they usually only bite once (in colorado, we get monsterous wolf spiders… ::shudder: or twice.
Poor kid, bug bites suck - you can also stick a mesh bag (nylon sock?) full of oatmeal under the bathtub tap and toss some baking soda in there -that will help with the itch.

oops, sorry, just adding that I misinterpreted the bite pairings… so that kind of rules out poisen ivy, which tends to be in patches.
Spiders. Have been nailed by a few; the bite marks invariably appear as two very small punctures within a few mm of each other, depending on size/breed of the biter.
If ANY further reddening (or anything else, like shortness of breath) occurs seek med help pronto.
I AM NOT A DOC. (just an occasional spider victim)
SIX on his bottom? And he was using a sleeping bag (that might not have been used since last summer)?
My first thought would be chiggers. I don’t think mosquitos would winter over well in a sleeping bag and it is too early for that many bites. (I haven’t even encountered a mosquito yet in our barns that are down near a swamp.)

another one - what about ants? My husband got nailed several times by one flying ant (ok, it’s a long shot, but if the sleeping bag was outside…) on his back and it left a row along his shoulder and the back of his neck. He was starting to look downright tribal.

Has he been out playing in long grass, say-- a vacant lot? If so, I would guess that they are chigger bites. Are the bites right under his waistband, or near the leg holes of his underwear? Chiggers love to bite right under elastic. Often the bites will be near each other.
I’m glad he’s feeling better.

Are you postive that they’re bug bites, and not something like the beginning of chicken pox or measles? That you’re finding that many over a short time period makes me wonder more about a childhood illness, since you’d think with a bug infestation large enough to put a dozen marks on him in two days that other family members would be at least a little bothered by similar bites too.
