Is there any way to download a flash game onto a portable drive so I can play it on a computer without internet access?
I’ve done this on OS X using Safari - what OS are you running?
XP. A little googleing has given me some idea, but it appears I will need to download two different freeware programs and jump through a lot of hoops. Anyone know an easier way?
Well, the basic idea is to download the game from the browser cache. This is really easy to do in Safari on OS X, so it might be worth trying Safari on XP. Once the game is loaded, you go to the “Activity” window and find the game, which will be a large .swf file. You then option-click {probably alt-click in Windows) on that entry to download it.
The game probably exists as a swf file embedded on the page. You can view its location from the source code or in firefox Tools > Page Info > media.
Select it. Click “save as”
Now save it to your desktop or wherever. The swf file isnt set to run with anything so now you need to right-click, select ‘open with’, and choose firefox.
No 3rd party software needed.
Yeah, you can pretty much just download the .swf file - your browser does the same thing before it plays the flash file. This won’t work with every flash program, though - many larger flash programs download additional parts / data when running and while it’s certainly possible to get around that, I don’t know of any easy way to do it.
Addendum: if you have firefox with adblock plus, flash movies get a “block” tab at the top-right end. If you click on that you can see the url for the flash movie. You can then just copy & paste that url into the browser’s address bar, load and save it. A similar strategy works with flashblock.
I’ve found that most flash games are like the ones **Superfluous Parentheses **mentions. The freeware programs may work better.
In fact, most good flash games have a full version or non-flash equivalent. But for the few that don’t, I’m really interested in the freeware programs you discovered. Mind sharing the info?
The Firefox webrowser + the DownloadHelper extension will let you easily download embedded objects such as Flash games and YouTube videos.
if you go here and download the flash projector content debugger for your operating system, i am using 10 on Vista.
Just open it up, and drag the swf file into it, it will open the file for offline play.
