I am looking for some WINTEL diagnostics and virus scanning tools that I can D/L and take to a friend’s house. He can’t even access the net and has probably got some kind of malware zoo on his drive so I want to be a bit careful. I’d REALLY like to avoid bringing this home with me so the ideal thing would be to run it off a CD.
I can Google quite a few things that seem appropriate but really don’t know which ones work and which ones might be some kind of scam or worse yet, one of those things that constantly advertises to you or won’t allow you to remove it when you’re done.
Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If he can’t access the internet then Microsoft Security Essentials and MalwareBytes won’t be of much use as both connect to the internet to download virus definitions once installed. With MSE you can download the definitions separately but it’s a bit of a mess.
SuperAntispyware is a good one to go for as you can download the full update package in a single executable file. HijackThis is handy for deleting the auto-runs associated with viruses but won’t actually scan for them itself, you need to know what you are looking for to use HJT effectively.
Rkill.com is useful if the infection is preventing all .exe files from running (which is very common with the recent generation of spyware going around). Rkill temporarily disables the spyware that is preventing you from running any other scanners.
