Dowsing and Paranormal

In a thread about finding graves, I suggested that one should ask a dowser.

  • just an off the wall suggestion, I’ve no idea whether it would work.

In GQ I was surprized by the strident opposition to the idea that dowsing works for water.

The reasoning seems to be that because this site is offering $1m therefore such things don’t work

Apart from two tales about dowsing from people who watched it, and who are normally cynical, that I know well, I also know a guy who can do tricks with detecting types of crystal.

To me, the idea of slightly paranormal phenomena is perfectly natural, for example some nurses can often diagnose a problem - from smell which is logical - and I know others who have, and I myself have, experienced strange reactions to ‘alternative healers’.

I would be interested to hear what others think on the subject.

I’ve put it in GD as it is not exactly GQ fodder.

What puzzles me is why people deny the existence of things that others consider rather mundane.

I passed a couple of bent wires over the screen and they crossed right on top of this thread.

What puzzles a lot of us is why people embrace the claimed (but unproven) existence of things they themselves cannot explain or can even conceive of how they might explain.

I belatedly realized that this is a duplicate thread. It should really not be here - apologies.

Actually when I see something a bit strange, I tend to look for an explanation.

I reckon that we have certain instincts or abilities that have got suppressed, for example I can hear higher pitched noises than most people in my age group ( supposedly high pitched noises disturb adolescents, perhaps my ears forgot to age ).

Since FRDE opened this before he realized there is already a dowsing thread going in Great Debates, I’ll close this one.
