dpr's magical tour of last century

A few people have noticed the addendums below my recent postings. For thos of you who wondered (and for those of you who neither noticed or cared), an explanation:

Coming up to 1900 posts (and the end of the 20th century) I thought it might be nice to celebrate the last 100 years as we see the 21st in. And what better way to do so than give a brief rundown of things that happened and correspond them to my current post.

They may be interesting, pivotal or quirky.

So if you have any interesting trivia, favourite references (to fave people, groups, artistic works etc) or birthdays email me and let me know.

I hope you enjoy this occasionally-informative tour… think of it as another step in the war against ignorance (he says hoping all is references are accurate).

1924: The gas chamber was used for the first time (Nevada), Truman Capote born (he wrote Breakfast at Tiffany’s), The first traffic light in Europe was set up on the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin

I especially liked the one from 1922 about the rain of spiders (but can’t remember where and can’t reference it because it changed with your next post).

I don’t suppose you would consider posting some of those in this thread, since the others change with your sig?

And thanks, I enjoy reading them.

1925: Malcom X and ‘Yogi’ Berra, Maragaret Thatcher, Rock Hudson and Rod Serling born, Al Capone took over Chicago’s underworld, In Russia Stalin took power over Trotsky.

I need some trivial occurences. Or even some favourite instances. Post 'em here or email me but do it regardless. Get involved in this 20th Century memorabilia.

1930: Pluto discovered. The first synthetic rubber was produced. Born: Niel Armstrong and Sean Connery. James A. Dewar created "Twinkies" First soccer World Cup (won by Uruguay).

Well… I was born in 1982. Not such a special thing, I know.

However, Prince William was born the same year. (Day after me, actually.)

Well, I’m of Ukrainian heritage, and an important you’re nearly at an important year in the Ukraine’s history: The Artificial Famine/Genocide in Ukraine from 1932-33. Instigated by Stalin, it was meant to break the spirits of the Ukrainian farmers and peasants and bring them into the collective. Between 6 and 7 million peasants were starved to death.

OK guys - in the home straight now. If you’ve got any requests or ideas for any years tween 1983 and now you better get 'em in.
