Dr. Blair, Dr. Jay Hamilton?

I was watching “The Practice” this evening and was reminded of a gnawing question that’s been with me for a few years now:

In a hospital scene you could hear in the background a nurse paging,

“Dr. Blair, Dr. Blair…Dr. Hamilton, Dr. Jay Hamilton.”

I’ve noticed this in many hospital scenes through the years (actually I first noticed that page on Queensryche’s “Operation Mindcrime” album some years ago), mostly soaps or prime time dramas. It’s always the same page with the same voice.

Can anyone tell me where it comes from and why it’s always the same damn page? Is there a rule or something that they have to use that particular page on TV or other recordings?

Hey, I’ve noticed this too! The first time was when I was watching the Cosby show (the one where he’s an OB/GYN) and they used that page. I couldn’t get Operation Mindcrime out of my head for the rest of the show.

I would imagine it is on a tape of canned background noises somewhere out in Hollywood. I did a quick search on “television background sound effects” and found

and a few others.

If they were going to use something canned, why, oh why, not use “Calling Doctor Howard, Doctor Fine, Doctor Howard … Calling Doctor Howard, Doctor Fine, Doctor Howard …” ???
