We have much to be proud of, we humans. Between our adequate brains and amazing opposable thumbs, our accomplishments are vast, inspiring, perplexing.
We are a species that uses tools, a species that invents technology, a species that creates and appreciates art, a species that has learned to fly, a species that has traversed the hostile expanse of space to visit the Moon and return, and sings songs to celebrate. We are a species that builds great airships, then sends them to take pictures of sporting events that are held in domed stadiums that we have constructed. We are an unfathomable combination of astonishing intellect and vapid, inane purposes to which we assiduously apply ourselves.
Most recently, we have begun to learn to communicate with dolphins, to understand and treat with perhaps the only alien intelligence we shall ever be privileged to know. Great strides are being made. And to what end? What shall we do with this new ability? What of our essence do we offer, and what do we ask in return?
Of course. We teach them to whistle TV’s Batman theme song.
