Dr Who and Elton (8-Dec)

I recognized Elton from “Hustle,” which I’ve seen a few episodes of, but I didn’t realize until just now that David Tennant played Junior Crouch. I thought he looked familiar. :smack:

After I mostly got over Eccelston leaving I went straight to IMDB. Thats the only reason I knew.

I watched it only because it was Pvt. Blithe, as I’d heard bad things of this episode.

It was the actress playing Ursula that was driving me batty, though, until I realized she’d played the annoying Morgan le Fay from that horrible Merlin miniseries with Sam Wossname and Isabella Rosellini.

That’s the problem with watching a lot of British TV and movies. The more I watch, the more I realize that there are only like a dozen actors total*, and they all work in every single project. I find myself recognizing extras and wracking my brain for the rest of the show trying to figure out where I know them from.

*Yes, I know. It’s an exaggeration for effect.

A surprisingly large number of Brits in Band of Brothers: Damian Lewis, Dexter Fletcher, James McAvoy, Jamie Bamber, Simon Pegg, Jason Done, Jamie Harding, Iain Robertson, Rick Warden, Matthew Leitch, Tim Matthews, Andrew Lee Potts, Joseph May.

That list is just from those on IMDB who actually have a photo in their bio. Oddly, the only name actor I can think of in the series who played a British soldier is Tom Hanks

It was driving the Rhythm household crazy too… didn’t recognize her appearance, but the voice stood out. Then it hit me – Shirley Henderson played Moaning Myrtle in Harry Potter.

I can see how people disliked the episode, but I really enjoyed it. I love to see how “supporting” characters react in their real lives. It was interesting to see how Jackie lived, acted, and responded to the situations left behind by Rose and the Doctor. I felt very, very sorry for her and her lonliness and abandonment by (A) Rose and (B) Mickey. I personally viewed this episode as a future-plot-building episode. ::grin:: I’m ALSO looking forward to a future episode where the guy with the computer-implanted-in-his-head comes back. I’m dying to see what’s happening with him.

I generally enjoy the show, however I immediately went into “60 minute episode in 10 minutes” DVR mode once they did the stupid Benny Hill running around bit.

dons anorak Actually, I think you’ll find that in point of fact that was a stupid Scooby Doo running around bit, as implied by Russell T Davies in his obsession with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and their own self referencing of themselves as the Scoobies.

Not that surprising considering where they filmed it. It surprised me who good the accents were. I’m used to hearing the shitty American accents on BBC sitcoms. There was not one it BoB that rang false with me, particularly Damian Lewis. If I didn’t know better I would swear he was from Pennsylvania. Looking back I would say that Marc Warren had the worst one as Blithe. At the time I took his stilted speech as just how he was playing the character.

Since there has already been a hijack I’ll just link to this old thread I started in case anyone is interested in the character that Marc Warren played in Band of Brothers. Albert Blithe did not die the way it was shown in the mini series.

I’m glad people here mostly liked this episode. I was waiting for it to come out on Sci-Fi so I could find out what the reaction would be. I loved it, but it was definitely a weird episode, and I’m not surprised at how divisive it is. (Though I didn’t know about Victor Kennedy being a parody of someone.)

One of my favorite things about Doctor Who is how it manages to change tone and genera for different episodes while keeping a sense of consistency. This was a very drastic change in tone, to the point that it felt like an episode of a completely different show, but the use of Elton’s POV and the fact that he was clearly an unreliable narrator allowed that, I thought. (Someone pointed out that his unreliability was demonstrated by how different the band sounded depending on whether we through Elton’s memory or “for real”.)

I loved the Scooby-Doo chase, but it would have completely ruined any other episode it had appeared in. I thought the fact that it worked so well here showed what a strong episode this was. Plus, I really liked the insight into Jackie.

The Absorbalof was a bit naff (Did I use that correctly?), but I thought it was really cool that they let a kid design a monster and actually used it. This was definitely the right episode to do that with.

BTW, I’ve been watching Torchwood lately, and I’ve really enjoyed it (though based on past threads, British Dopers seem not to have). It’s been very uneven, much like Doctor Who, and has a lot of flaws, but it started much stronger than either season of Doctor Who did, and it has gotten gradually better. I think this would be a great show for Sci-Fi to pick up if they don’t mind editing a few bad words.

I hope Sci-Fi does pick it up. I understand Dr Who is doing well in the ratings, so they might.

I am curious. Most people in the thread liked the episode.

**Did anyone besides me watch with their kids? **

I don’t have any kids, but I definitely think kids would have a hard time with the change in style. “Unreliable narrator” is bit of a sophisticated concept for kids to pick up on their own, and kids mostly like knowing what to expect. Lots of adults couldn’t handle the sudden change from what Doctor Who usually is.

BBC America has been showing the Eccleston season so I’m rather hoping that BBC America will pick up Torchwood instead, so we won’t have to worry about Sci Fi chopping the hell out of it. BBC-A runs shows with actual, like, tits and ass and swears intact without resorting to Nanny Censor for much worse than F-bombs.

I was rocking my four-month old to sleep while watching it, does that count? (He’s not allowed to look at the TV, but he can listen…). ElzaHub hopes he’ll be a Doctor Who fan when he’s older.

I liked the episode. It was a nice departure from the usual formula, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. We did spend a lot of time going “WTF?”, but once we realized it was a different kind of episode, we really enjoyed it. And for once, Jackie only made me want to punch her in the face a couple of times, instead of repeatedly.

Shirley Henderson also played Jude in the Bridget Jones flicks, as well. It took me a few minutes to figure out where I’d heard her very distinctive voice before.

By the way, Brits…question about someone in an upcoming episode (I think) - I’ll spoiler it.

I could swear we’d read about Wendy Richie from EastEnders doing an episode. Is that in this season? And if it is, is she palatable? I’ve hated her on EE the past couple of years, and everything I’ve read from the actress strikes me as her being an insufferable bitch, so I’m really hoping she won’t make me want to fast forward through her part.

E.

It’s Yvonne Hartmann, formerly of Eastenders, who appears in the two-part season finale

Who’d she play? The name doesn’t strike me as familiar.

E.

Doh! That was the Who character name! The actress was Tracy-ann Obermann. What can I say, I don’t watch Eastenders

That makes much more sense! I know exactly who that is!

Thank you!
