Dragon fruit!!

I just had one of these!

It tasted kind of like kiwi fruit with a black peppery undertone. It was pretty good! I think the best part about it was the color. The outside was bright red and green, but when I peeled back part of that skin, the inside was BRIGHT PURPLE. Like, smack in the eye bright. It looked a lot like mardi gras, and I couldn’t help but feel like someone ought to be throwing beads at my head.

Anybody else ever try this? If you haven’t, try it! Exotic fruit is fun!

Mmm! I loves me some dragon fruit. It’s starting to be a bit of a goer in the north Australian tropical fruit industry. And my mama grows it along the fence. Being a worry-wort about such things, I was kinda scared of it escaping and taking over tropical wetlands - it propagates from cuttings in a flash.

Amazing flavour. The different varieties have different flavours - I’ve had them with white flesh and with gorgeous red RED flesh. They have a very perfume-y flavour and crispy juicy texture, sort of like an apple, but the seeds give a kiwi fruit kind of crunch too.

Dragonfruit!

I’ve had one! It was good, but I can’t remember the exact taste. Just that I liked it

(It was the white flesh variety, by the way. Very pretty.)

I saw them at my local Publix recently, and had it in my cart until I realized they wanted $6 apiece for them. I regretfully put it back. I’m a grad student. :frowning:

I’ve never seen anywhere around me that has ever sold dragonfruit. I’ve had the Snapple Fire drink that’s supposedly flavoured with dragonfruit though, and I liked that.

About the most exotic I can get around here are starfruit, which I’ve never tried 'cos I’m not sure how it’s supposed to be eaten and have no idea what they taste like. And they’re kinda spendy so it’s a bit much to throw at something that may well be revolting.

I’ve never eaten a dragon fruit but I had some dragon fruit juice this morning.

They pleasant, though slightly astringent. To eat, just wash and separate the “lobes”. You can eat the skin.

I bought one once and was very disappointed; the white flesh inside was sweetish, but very bland. Possibly this was because it will have been shipped halfway around the world to be sold to me, probably having been picked under ripe. I can certainly say that the prickly pears we see on sale here are worthless and nothing at all like the sweet, melony things I’ve picked and eaten fresh on mediterranean holidays, so maybe the dragon fruit I ate suffered a similar problem.

Aw, shucks. I’ve been eyeing them at Publix lately, too, but I hadn’t noticed the price. Guess I’ll buy some more apples. sigh

There was a company taht was selling dragonfruit juice. It used to disappear really quickly, and I always wondered what the hall dragonfruit was. The, inexplicably, it disappeared. I always figured it was a Krusty’s Ribwich type deal.

It actually comes from the pockets of a pocket fox. I’m sure you know the rest.

Oh boy! I’m grateful for this. The supermarkets by me always have this fruit, and I’m like Mindfield…I didn’t know how to eat it so I just avoid it. Nevermind that I could google it and look it up. I’d just be in the store and see the nice little starfruit and think, “Gee, I wonder what that’s like?” And then promptly move it aside in my mind because I didn’t know how to eat it. Since my fantastic experience with the dragon fruit yesterday, I’m on the star fruit thing next time I go to the store!
