The mighty and Dreaded Cthulhu has just arrived in the Land of Rising Sun, where He will wreak havok on the populance not seen since the last time Godzilla came through here. Japanese schoolgirls bewares!!! MWHAHAHA!!!
Seriously, I just got to Japan yesterday, to visit my parents in Yokohama after I finished with this years college. (My father is stationed at the Yokusaka Naval Staition). Anyways, I was wondering if if any dopers had any suggestions on what to do while I am here, besides terrorizing the local populance.
Also if you’re into manga and anime and if you can get to a branch, there is a very famous manga store called Mandarake. It’s a collector’s dream; they have all kinds of titles from old to modern. The employees all dress in cosplay. I believe they make you store your gear before you enter, and they only let a certain number of visitors in at a time.
If you go, this is another thing I would like to remain blissfully unaware of.
Btw, you weren’t visiting the Tsukiji fish market this morning, were you? I saw an early 20-ish American guy having breakfast with his parents at the McDonald’s next door, only I assumed that they had come to Japan to visit him.
I checked out that Mandarake page - while the Great and Dreaded Cthulhu finds nothing disturbing on that page, at least not to my sensibilites. Of course, I am an evil monstrosity from beyond, so your experience may very. Also, that Ramen Museum sounds interesting and tasty.
Also, ** Sublight ** while I did eat at McDonalds with my parents this morning, it was the one on the military base.
I saw on this TV show that they built an actual ladder to heaven.
The show is about some podunk Colorado mountain town.
Some kid dies in it every show.
You might like it.
Plus, you can tour heavan and destroy it… Bonus!
It wasn’t too bad - kinda nifty actually. It didn’t break anything, and the shaking was a pretty interesting sensation. It went on for what - 15 seconds, which my parents tell me is quite long.
I live on the 9th floor of my building and it was really SHAKIN’ up here.
Yokosuka, huh? I’m at Yokota Air Base in Fussa, which is just outside of tokyo. Go to Roppongi. I havent been there but everyone says its nice. Go to Fussa! Ha but seriously there’s not that much of interest here that you can’t find in downtown tokyo. But enjoy the bizzareness of all those outdoor drink machines on every corner and the billions of brands of canned coffee.
Hmm, I’m in Tokyo and it seemed a lot longer then that; longer then the other two I noticed since I’m here. Not really scary (3rd floor) but I always get slightly “seasick” (earthquake-sick?). Am I the only one?
I heard from someone at work (10th floor building) that it was much more scary. This one was pretty big since Japanese actually noticed and talked about it afterwards

Is there anyone in Osaka free on Thursday afternoon? I’m going to be in Osaka to get my kid’s passports, and after my appointment at 12.30pm I’m free until the ferry leaves in the evening.
The Aussie consulate is in Chuo-ku, Shiromi-cho in the Twin 21 MID Tower. Who would like to get together? I’ll have the smallest blossom in tow, so I can only go places that are reasonably child-friendly.
Not much that I remember clearly, and even less that I’ll admit in public.
If you go, guard your wallet. Not from thieves, however, but from yourself. It’s amazing how much money one can spend when drunk, and Roppongi offers plenty of goods and services to spend it on.
