Dreading Fall leaf pickup? don't sweat 'em, shred 'em and spread 'em!

Putting it in bags, having your city/town pay to pick it up and bring it to the landfill is insane. Why do cities do this??

Kansas City, MO stopped putting yard waste into the landfill some time ago. They do a special spring and fall yard waste pickup every year - paper bags, some limit (20 maybe). If you are a lawn bagger, you can hire a service to come pick up you bags weekly. Otherwise, I believe there is a compost drop off site you can transport to yourself, but my understanding on that is that you can’t use bags there at all - if you bring it in paper bags you need to dump them out and take the bags away.

We have something similar. You can dump recyclables at many places all over the city. Usually schools or other publicly owned spaces. The one closest to me is at a fire station. You can dump leaves or grass and it will be recycled by the city and in the spring you can get free compost back from the city. They also conveniently have a recycle bin for trash/plastic bags right next to them.

I compost my own using a couple of horizontal barrels on stands that you just rotate occasionally to mix it up, no pitchforking needed.

Our city used to allow extra yard waste to be bagged in paper lawn bags and set out with your yard waste wheelie bin each week. They’ve banned paper bags, so now you can request an extra pickup, or take it down to the compost facility yourself.

My town doesn’t pick up trash, etc. But the town dump, excuse me, the town recycling and transfer center, accepts unbagged leaves and similar yard waste, and composts it. That’s what my neighbors do with their leaves. I leave mine on the property. (But do move them off the lawn.)
