Dreams triggered by urinary urgency?

This evening, my sister and I were discussing a type of dream we both have had. The dream is obviously triggered by the need to pee. When I have the dream, it’s like this: I’m trying to find a bathroom. When I find it, there is something wrong. The toilet is in the middle of the living room. Or I’m in a restroom where the toilets are disgustingly dirty or configured in a way that is totally foreign to me.

I conducted a survey of males, and 100% of the survey population reported never having this kind of dream. (OK, I asked my brother-in-law, and he said he hadn’t. Maybe the sample size was not statistically valid.)

So, Dopers, please tell me if you have had the kind of dream I describe and identify your gender. (Or if you have had dreams triggered by the need to pee that do not fit the pattern I described, please describe what you have dreamed!)

Well, I guess I’ll be the first to bite. Female here.

I have had dreams triggered by the need to pee. Usually they involve needing to pee, finding a toilet, and having difficulty peeing. I am usually grateful for that last part.

Female, and yes I have those dreams and hate them! Mine almost always involve the most disgusting public toilets you can imagine, and they often lack privacy. I figure this is my brain’s way of making sure I don’t let loose and pee in the bed–by making me dream of places where I’d explode trying to hold it in before I’d dare go, and distressing me enough to make me wake up and walk to the bathroom.

Male. Dream of peeing, sometimes myself.

Female here. I have frequent peeing dreams. I either dream that I can’t find a bathroom or I dream I am peeing but not having any relief. So then I have to find another bathroom…

Anytime I walk up to a urinal in a dream that is my sign to wake up. If I begin pissing into the urinal, well, the piss isn’t actually going into the urinal. No, I haven’t actually fully pissed myself since growing up but I’ve experienced a drizzle or 2 in the past.

When I have these dreams they aren’t disgusting, though the doors may be off the stall. Mainly I just simply cannot go, I try but it is just not happening at all.

Female.

I’ve had these dreams before, and usually they resolve with me waking up needing to pee like a horse.

A very few times, they have resolved with me peeing IN THE BED (yes, even as an adult…I will admit it…only one time was I drunk, FTR ;))

Wow, that is a VERY disturbing event for an adult, no? That training we got as little kids is VERY strong. So it stands to reason that it takes some really convincing dream scenario (ahhhh, I really need to pee, oh, great, there’s a toilet!) to allow us to let it go outside of the accepted bounds, even in our deepest sleep.

So YES, I have pee’d the bed as an adult! Are you happy? So sue me!:smiley:

Ditto to all the above.

Ditto to all the above.

Male here.

I sometimes dream of having to go the bathroom, and when I do, it’s usually of one restroom in particular. It’s weird; no matter where I was in the dream prior to that moment, once I open the restroom door I’ll usually find myself in the same place. But I won’t realize it right away. I’ll first walk up to a urinal, try to pee, be unable to… and then slowly come to realize that I’m in the same bathroom again… and then almost immediately realize that I’m dreaming and thus wake up. I’ve had a lot of fun dreams interrupted this way and it sucks, though it’s probably better than pissing myself…

The image of that restroom is almost always the same, a stark, dirty, place with a whole row of empty urinals illuminated by off-green florescent lighting. I think it’s a mixture of one particular school restroom from my chlidhood mixed in with a desolate Hollywood scene or something. shrug It’s stuck with me forever for some reason.

I’ve had those dreams before and it’s horrid! The most bizarre dream of that sort I ever had was when I was about eight years pregnant and getting up 2-3 times a night anyway. In the dream, I was in Walmart, where the good bathrooms are all the way in back of the store. I really had to pee, so I waddled as quickly as a pregnant moose could down the interminable aisles, barely able to keep from making a puddle on the floor. When I finally got to the ladies’ room, there was a sign on the door–“Closed for Sunday.” I was like,. I looked closer and the sign actually had hours of operation! Knowing that I’d never make it back to the crappy bathroom at the front of the store, I begged an associate to PLEASE let me go in, I couldn’t wait! She did, but lo, and behold, they were remodeling the place and all that was available were holes in the floor where the toilets had been.

I was very glad when I figured out it was just a dream–but, even so, I still barely made it to the bathroom!

Male, here.

I’ve had many of these dreams. But mine involves a bathroom so elusive that I never find it – I keep going down hallways and going up stairs and it’s just on the next floor or just around the next corner, but I never actually get there.

Female here, have-to-pee-really-bad-in-my-dream bathrooms are usually filthy, no privacy, and very difficult to find. It surprises me, though, that after so many years of having these dreams my dream self is still too stupid to just say HEY! GET YOUR CARCASS OUT OF BED AND GO PEE!

Yup, that’s what I have, too. I’ve started just getting up and going to the bathroom when I wake up after my first solid round of sleep (usually around 5 or 6) instead of waiting for this dream to show up half an hour later. I can sleep soundly after that.

Male here. In these “gotta pee” scenarios, I’ve also had the variations where the bathroom was too filthy or exposed to use.

Just as often however, the scenario will be one where I do find a usable receptacle for my urine, but in the course of relieving myself, I will realize that I am taking much longer than usual and am getting no relief from my bladder’s urgency. It is then that I realize I’m dreaming and will try to wake myself to take a leak.

I’ve never had these dreams result in an accident, but I did have one occasion where 3 of them were nested together: each time I woke up to relieve myself, I realized I was dreaming and tried to wake up. By the third time, I knew I was really awake because I was so tired I decided to just hold it in (the alarm was going to go of in another 30 minutes anyway).

When I was a kid I was a bedwetter. I remember many times, dreaming that I needed to pee, got out of bed, walked downstairs to the bathroom and peed in the toilet. That was a dream; in reality I was still in bed, peeing. And boy did it feel good!

Another one plagued by these dreams. Typically mine involve huge modern hotels, and there’s never a toilet on the floor I’m on so I have to find a lift and then find the floor with the loo. Then I get all the disgusting, missing loos etc. I remember in one I finally found a lovely clean, intact loo and one wall of the cubicle was made of glass looking through to the dining room.

I never had those, but I do have some where I’m sitting naked in some high school class and no one notices.

Also, I have had some dreams where my cat’s clawing my balls to shreds and I feel the pain!

I’d love to have some normal dreams about needing to pee though.

I always get those Stephen King nightmare ones!

Male, have often had the horrible-toilet dream, sometimes an inaccessible toilet (e.g. jammed tight in between the wall and the washbasin, or under the washbasin), sometimes an elusive bathroom, and sometimes the found-it-but-am-getting-no-relief dream. Sometimes I dream I am peeing or have just peed somewhere inappropriate such as a laundry hamper or wastepaper bin. Never peed the bed in my sleep.
