Dreamworks' Sinbad

Well, I was surprised not to see another thread about the new Dreamworks animated movie Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas… so here’s one.

My family (plus one guest) just saw it, on my company’s dime, thanks to the bonus I won last month ($120 in AMC Gift Certificates). I thought it was pretty good… solid animation and lots of action. Basically 90 minutes of brain candy, which was just fine with me on a warm Sunday afternoon.

I really liked the scene with the Sirens, for its originality in how they were portrayed, and I like the characterization of Eris, to goddess of Discord. Michelle Pfeiffer did a decidedly nice job with the voice of Eris, and her animation was stunning. Perhaps the only thing I would have hoped for was that her appearance be a little more… chaotic. Though the shifting sea of sand in Tartarus, her realm, was a nice touch and very well handled.

It wasn’t particularly deep or moving, and while I haven’t read the original stories of Sinbad for a loooong time, my feeling was that they glossed over quite a bit from the original myths, and outright changed a few things. And yet, it was easy to forget that while watching and just enjoy the story they told. The kids liked it, too… they came out of the theatre all hyped and happy.

Worth every cent I paid for it.
