Dress me for a night out!

I know you were just sitting around, thinking “Gee, what’s Morgainelf wearing?” Don’t try to pretend you weren’t.

OK, so here’s your chance to participate in dressing me.

I’m going into Boston tonight with two of my friends. They are both size 2, and very pretty. I am size 12/14, and of medium cutosity. I have dark brown shoulder-length hair, dark brown eyes, and very light skin. I sort of look like a cross between Ally Sheedy and Linda Ronstadt. Sorta.

I’m 35 (am told I look 28), and a Mom, so I’m not out to pick up men. I just want to look hot and not entirely out of place.

We’re going to The Enormous Room in Cambridge. Possibly dancing afterward.

I’m going to go shopping in about an hour. What should I buy???

Here are the rules:

  1. No belly shirts. Believe me, no one wants to see that.
  2. It’s farging cold here. Please keep that in mind.
  3. Hi Opal!
  4. Try not to make me look like a dork. Please. I trust you.

Here’s a better link to the Enormous Room. http://boston.streetmail.com/cgi-bin/picks/pick.cgi?module=full&TipID=1516

Pantswise, I’m always pro-jeans (they’re warm, come in lots of shapes and sizes, and are always in style), but I don’t know if you wanted to look a little dressier than that…

Also, for your footsies - remember to wear something that won’t give you blisters; especially if you’ll be dancing.
Have a fun evening! I’m sure you’ll look lovely, no matter what!

Jeans, your husband’s white dress shirt (I’m assuming he is larger than you, so its attractively baggy) and one of his ties.

I know a woman who fits your description exactly and there are a few colors that look really good on her. The sort of mulberry or deep burgundy colors and things that have a coppery color to them work so well as lipstick or nail polish.

Well, if I’m going out for dinner and dancing, I like to wear skirts with elastic waistbands- they’re expandable! Yo get more baklava that way.

Sorry. I would help if I could, but I’m not fashionable.

I think a spaghetti-strap kind of top with something velvet over it would be cute. And jeans, if they work at the venue you’re at. Have fun!

Oooooh, all good ideas.

I don’t know about jeans, though. Boston’s a dressy town - I don’t want to be limited if we decide to go out afterward. Lots of places have no-jeans policies.

Opengrave - that’s a great suggestion. I tend to wear all black, because I never know what colors to buy (and because I’m an old ex-goth girl), but I’ll keep my eyes out for burgundies.

Come to think of it, I have a pair of low-rise boot cut stretch pants in charcoal. They’re a jean cut without being denim. They’re in the back of my closet with the tags still on -

Going to try them now, and see if I can find a burgundy spaghetti strap top.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

Oh, Dangerosa, wrong assumption. My husband is 5’6, 140 lbs. His shirts give me an interesting look, but not the one I think you were going for.

You beat me. I wa just going to post that I got a pair of flat front boot cut black “2-way stretch” Dockers (at Kohl’s - are they in your area?) that have worked out well for me. I find the flat front style more flattering (especially since I cant put my keys or phone in a front pocket and spoil the line.) I think the boot cut is good for a night out.

I’d go with several layers - it’s cold here too-so you can get there comfortably but it might get steamy in there if it’s as jumping as in the pictures.
Whatever you wear have a rgeat time!

I would take that pair of pants with the tags on them, and wear them with a black turtleneck sweater. Not a thick sweater, but one that is light-to-medium weight. Turtleneck sweaters like that should not be boxy, but a little more fitted. It more flattering, and you probably already have one in your closet.

Also - a good fallback going out outfit is a pair of boot cut (or stylishly cut - anything EXCEPT pleated front-tapered-to-the-ankle type) khakis. The good thing about khakis is that you can dress them up or down, and not have to worry about the dress codes. And you can’t go wrong with the khakis and the black turtleneck, either.

Or, a nice pair of jeans (like the newer, really dark-rinsed jeans) in a modern cut are awesome.

Try Old Navy - you can get a lot of relatively inexpensive stuff that is semi-trendy - the balance of the trend and the cheap is good. And, they have a large range of sizes, and a lot of their pants (jeans & khaki’s & more) have a little stretch in them - which helps make the pants fit better, and is a little more forgiving after a night of excess!

Also - I live in Chicago, and I swear by wearing a pair of tights under my pants in the colder months - not as bulky as long johns, and if you get control top, they help with the lines of your clothes.

Austen, I’m from suburban Chicago and I DO THE SAME THING! Always with the tights under my jeans. It makes a huge difference in the cold. But still looks nice. Great minds think alike!

Yay! I’m not alone! I have so many pairs of tights they need their own drawer.

Your flat-front pants (don’t forget to take the tags off), if they’re long enough, would probably look really cute with a low-heeled mule (not a chunky heel, more like a princess heel). In clubs, I like to go for the layering, so a spaghetti-strap top is a good choice, but I’d wear it under a shiny button-down shirt or a cropped leather jacket. That way you have thermoregulation options.

My equivalent outfit consists of a pair of dainty patent burgundy mules with a 2" medium to narrow heel, suede boot cut pants, a black tank top with a built in bra, and a shiny burgundy button down shirt with 3/4 sleeves. This outfit is also simple enough to go with a funky/ornate necklace or earrings. Whatever you wear, make sure you’re comfortable enough to have fun.

I’m going out in Boston tomorrow night. Here’s what I’m wearing:

Black flatfront bootcut pants from Old Navy

Green sheer silk beaded blouse with a ruffly front

silk long underwear under my pants

black kittenheel pointy toe ankle boots

Overcoat and pretty scarf

We’re going from Marche Movenpick to the Top of the Hub to the Irish bars between Faniuel Hall and the Garden. I think this is an outfit that can work in all of these places. Opinions?

Totally sounds great however I have some ideas- and I know Las Vegas doesnt get as cold as Chicago or Boston but please hear me out-

1-black is always awesome-velvet, suede, beading. If its really casual peasant shirts are cute.

2-Attention getting jewelry that you can handle all night- long( I mean to the shoulders) dangly earrings if you have short hair- a ribbon choker or silver charm on a velvet ribbon around a gorgeous long neck- (especially if you are blond) or black leather cuffs or chunky rings. hot hot hot

3- bustier top- if you can handle it and the attention you will get - not for the weak of heart or the modest wallflower- red lipstick dark eyes a’la Catherine Zeta Jones in Chicago.

One last thing I figured out in college- I went to UNR- Reno, Nevada and everytime we went out my roommate from Hawaii and I would totally dress - heels skirts makeup while the other girls only wore jeans and flannels- granted it was cold but we never had to wait in the cold or snow, never had to buy a drink and we never walked from bar to bar- sure the girls in our dorm building hated us but we made it to every party and the guys were gentlemen, because we looked like women.

Thanks for the tips, Agent Nvme77!

  1. Black. Beading. Check.

  2. I have short hair. Okay, I have an asymmetrical bob. Chin length on the right, buzzed on the left. I will wear my shoulder-duster earrings. I have red hair, and a very long, Audrey Hepburn type neck. Should I combine a choker with the long earrings? I have a pearl choker, some hippie beaded shit, and a velvet ribbon cross.

  3. Red lippy and dark eyes are standard in my pasty Irish family. My top already features my substantial, if not spectacular boobular region.

If you are between the Black Rose and the Irish Embassy tomorrow night, would you please buy an unemployed cutie sax player a Guinness?

Anyone who would take fashion advice from me shouldn’t be allowed out in public without a straightjacket, so I’ll stay away from that.

I really just felt the need to share this:

Upon seeing the thread title, my first thought was, “Cool! Virtual Colorforms on the SDMB!”

[sub]I have, apparently, been spending a bit too much time with my daughter, and her favorite toys, this week.[/sub]

However you end up doing it, enjoy the night out, Morgainelf.

I was all ready to give Morgainelf my fashion advice but I see it’s too late. Moving on to dinahmoe

I think you can’t go wrong with black pants that fit you well and a nice shirt. And the boots sound good.

You’re only allowed to wear one big/noticeable piece of jewelry at a time. I only wear long earrings when I am wearing no necklace. It’s impossible to say without seeing the neckline, but I suspect your first instincts were right - go with the long earrings and no necklace.

I don’t know about Boston but in New York the bars and clubs can be really overheated in the winter. You couldn’t survive in the silk long underwear here. Also, I’m usually only outside long enough to hop in a cab on those kinds of nights out, so I don’t have to dress so warmly. YMMV of course.

OK - recap of the fashion disaster that is me, from Friday night.

Here’s what I ended up wearing:
Gray flat front boot cut pants with a little stretch. They were just OK - looked good at the beginning, but got a little baggy towards the end. They’re a size 14, and I’m really inching closer to a 12 these days - the stretch helped.

I ALWAYS wear control top tights under my pants in the winter. Glad I’m not the only one!

I found a pretty peasant shirt to wear - tones of burgundy, orange, and beige. It was one of those that’s really wrinkly. It was completely different from what I’d normally wear (it was between that shirt and a longish black button front shirt from Jones New York.) I decided to go for more color than normal. I’ll admit it looked pretty, but I would have been much more comfortable and confident in the black shirt.

Found an amazing pair of mottled gray short boots, with one of those super thin (flat but tall - you know what I mean) heels. Regular price - $200, my price, $17.50!!! Yea end of season sales.

Had a great time, didn’t worry too much about the clothes once I was there.

And if you’re ever in Cambridge, GO to the Enormous room. What a fantastic place!

Thanks for all of yoru advice.
