Driving to Horseshoe Canyon

This week, I’ll be heading out to some of the National Parks in the Southwestern U.S., including Canyonlands. There’s a detached area of Canyonlands called Horseshoe Canyon, which has some really remarkable ancient rock art, at least 2000 years old. It’s a whole-day trip, to drive out there and spend 5-6 hours hiking.

I’m getting conflicting advice on whether you need a 4WD vehicle to get from Route 24 to the trail head; and it would be a real waste of precious time, to get so close, but not be able to get to the trail head.

So, does anybody know for sure, whether I can make the trip with my compact 2WD rental car? (Yes, I’m looking for a factual answer here, from someone who’s actually been there.)

I don’t know for sure because I don’t know the road conditions lately. It’s not bad at all normally. Graded. You do realize it’s a $500 tow if Nations has to come out and haul yer ass out, right?
