Just finished Season 1 of Drops of God. It was released on Apple TV+ in 2023. Season 2 is going to be released in Late January 2026.
The series received a 100% Rotten Tomatoes critic rating. Season 1 is self contained without any cliffhanger. It is based upon a Japanese manga series from 2004-2014. It is a French/Japanese/English series.
High level plot summary: Famous wine enthusiast (French) and author of an international wine guide dies and his estate is left to the winner of a contest, between his estranged daughter (French) and one of his best students (Japanese). The student also comes from a very wealthy Japanese diamond mining family. 8 episodes over the course of determining the outcome of the contest.
A very good drama series with a lot of history of wine, wine making, art and family dynamics.
Highly recommend.
I watched season one immediately on release because I was already a fan of the manga. It’s a very niche thing, but it’s a fantastic read.
I would say the series is pretty good as its own thing. The visuals are excellent (sumptuous design and cinematography) while the actual wine content is kind of silly. Not the same silly as the manga, which is wink-wink “wine battle over 9000!” silly. More “um, no” silly. The cast is great, though.
Still preferred the manga.
Anyone still watching? I thought it might be pretentious garbage ( I could care less about wine, but found the title of the show has another meaning)… I haven’t read the manga, seemed hard to believe it is based on one. Im clueless about mangas too.
I was thinking the plot could be also applied to marijuana, or rare foods, art or any other weird obsession that humans do.
Really like the multiple countries and languages involved.
Season 3…the rarest psychedics in the world.
Magic Mint anyone?
